Data Analyst -  Data Design and Readiness Team (Secondment/Fixed Term until Summer 2026)

Do you want to be part of a team that helps look after our data and information? Do you want to make sure that the business has access to the right data and information it needs to do the job? Do you love data as much as we do?

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for you to help shape Scottish Waters data-driven future.

Our Data Design & Readiness Team works across the business to improve data value, data productivity, data quality, data protection, and to drive a data-driven culture. We work to deliver our commitments with an agile approach.

If you love data as much as we do, then we see a future for you here with us.

What you will be doing:

The Data Design and Readiness team is focused on helping the business overcome its data and information challenges, making sure data quality is maintained, and ensuring that data and information is accessible to those who need it. This is a priority for us as we need to ensure that the business can make the right decisions based on the corporate data available, to deliver our ambitions and to maintain the high standard of service our customers expect. It also supports our employees, by making their lives easier by ensuring they have the right data and information to do their roles.

As a Data Analyst, you will contribute to improving the quality of data by analysing pain points and producing data analysis and quality reports. You will also seek out and deliver opportunities to enable our internal customers to maximise the value they can exploit from data and information.

Your role responsibilities may include contributing to improving data value, data productivity, data quality, data protection, and fostering a data-driven culture across Scottish Water. You will work with business stakeholders to ensure data quality improvement, automation, and the embedding of good data practices. Developing an in-depth understanding of corporate data, you will use that knowledge to help deliver the insights the business needs. You will contribute your own ideas and turn them into reality with the support of a collaborative and innovative team.

Additionally, you will develop data quality reports and quantify data-based pain points or issues. Identifying relevant data, combining it, and turning it into actionable insight will be a key part of your role. You will enable data and information to be trusted while contributing to the delivery and assurance of data governance documentation. You will also support the adoption and exploitation of corporate data and information technologies to maximise value for the organisation.

What you’ll need:

Essential Skills and Knowledge

You should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, along with strong communication and collaboration abilities. A strong technical ability with analysis tools such as Power BI or similar is required. You must be able to engage with stakeholders both internally and externally to Scottish Water to understand and document business processes and data requirements. A desire to continually improve and refine processes based on stakeholder feedback is important. Additionally, you should be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

Proficiency with data management tools and technologies such as SQL, data warehousing, or similar is desirable. Experience in a data or analytics role and/or relevant academic experience will be beneficial. A good understanding of data visualisation principles and practices, as well as knowledge and experience in data and information management and analysis, would be advantageous. Familiarity with Agile methodologies is also beneficial.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This is a full-time role (35 hours per week) with some weekend working and standby requirements. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 6. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a salary of £33,560. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to the maximum salary of £44,140.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - the closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 2nd March 2025).

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
