About the opportunity

The Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) plays a key role in enabling research excellence by facilitating higher quality impactful research and output by providing research compute, data science, software engineering, statistical and bioinformatics expertise to Sydney University researchers.

As a Research Compute Data Scientist, you will provide deep technical knowledge and support of translational data science and informatics projects to researchers across all faculties in the University. You will be advising the use of, develop, and implement data science algorithms, informatics methods, statistical approaches, software tools, data systems, and digital platforms, with a particular focus on using High Performance Computing and Cloud Computing technologies.

Reporting to the Research Computing Group Lead, your key responsibilities include:

  • provide collaborative data science and research computing support for projects undertaken by SIH

  • share your expertise in research computing, including HPC, GPU-computing, Cloud technologies, or similar.

  • create and enhance research activities through collaborative software development

  • build supportive relationships across the university and national research technology community

  • design and deliver inclusive training programs that enable world-class research

About you

If you are passionate about helping researchers add to our body of knowledge and achieve real-world impacts, you will thrive in this role.

  • tertiary qualifications in computational area of study (data science, computer science, statistics, engineering, physics, biology, bioinformatics, mathematics for example)

  • experience with modern data-centric programming languages such as Python, R, Julia, or Matlab

  • experience with data processing pipelines, data science, machine learning, high performance computing, AI, or cloud technologies expertise in research computing in Windows, MacOS, and primarily Linux environments

  • experience in research methodology with the ability to contribute to preparation of scientific papers

  • strong communication skills and enthusiasm for helping others succeed

  • (desirable) expert knowledge of developmental languages, e.g. CUDA, HIP, ROCm, OpenCL, C++, Java, Fortran and HPC tools akin to MPI and OpenMP.
