Universiteit Leiden
De Universiteit Leiden is een internationaal georiënteerde universiteit met een breed palet aan talentgericht onderwijs voor goede en gemotiveerde studenten, dat wordt geïnspireerd door wetenschappelijk onderzoek.The Faculty of Science and Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) are looking for candidates for a
PhD in Computational Imaging for Cultural Heritage (1.0 fte)
As a PhD student, you will be embedded in the research group Computational Imaging and Deep Learning (CIDL), part of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS). As a team, we develop cutting-edge techniques for advanced computational imaging systems, combining expertise from Mathematics (Inverse Problems), Computer Science (Efficient Algorithms and High-Performance Computing), and Physics (Image Formation Modelling).
Your project is part of the FLEXART research project, which focuses on the development of new techniques for X-ray-based imaging of thin, elongated objects, such as paintings. In this collaborative project we team up with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and with researchers from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the University of Antwerp and Cambridge University.
The main goal of your PhD project will be to develop novel image acquisition schemes and image reconstruction algorithms for using a combination of tomographic imaging and machine-learning based techniques. You will work with real data gathered from museum collection objects and will also design your own experiments to gather insights in the reconstruction of (paint) layers.
As a candidate, you must have a strong background in computational imaging and image processing, as well as excellent programming skills. In addition, you must have an understanding of or an interest in the physics of (X-ray) image formation.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct original and novel research in the field of Computational Imaging
- Publish and present scientific articles at international journals and conferences;
- Contribute to educational activities;
- Write a dissertation;
- Engage in collaborations with colleagues across domains!
Selection criteria
