Manager, Clinical Data and AI (Coyol, Alajuela)

Smith+Nephew, a global leader in medical technology since 1856, invites applications for the role of Manager, Clinical Data and AI. This position reports to the Head of Global Data Analytics within Global Clinical Research Operations, and is a member of the Global Data Analytics management team. This role manages our world-class AI/ML for clinical research, scalable cloud data infrastructure, and clinical data management. We’re looking for an innovative leader with a deep understanding of data science, cloud, AI/ML technologies, and an operational knowledge of the conduct of clinical research.

As Manager, Clinical Data and AI, you will oversee a diverse team of specialists within AI/ML, data science, and data management across our full portfolio including Advanced Wound Management, Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine & ENT. You will partner with team leads in clinical study management and clinical data management to develop internal solutions that support the operational excellence of clinical research and evidence generation.

What will you be doing?

• Manage a team of specialists in AI/ML, data science, and data management, encouraging a culture of continuous learning and innovation through training and career development mentorship.
• Oversee the development of innovative data and AI solutions, working with subject matter experts and stakeholders to ensure a meaningful business impact
• Perform as a thought leader in AI for the Global Clinical and Medical Affairs organization, recommending the application of appropriate methodologies.
• Build business and product domain knowledge for all S+N global franchises.
• Coordinate the use of data and AI software tools, and promote the adoption of new tools and techniques.
• Drive and maintain meticulous standards for programming and code version control, ensuring the reliable and timely delivery of robust AI/ML solutions.
• Oversee our global clinical data mesh and partner with data owners to ensure consistent standards, implement data quality controls, and support an extensible data model
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of AI/ML and data science methodologies, emerging data and AI technologies, industry standards for clinical data, regulatory guidelines, and data privacy laws including GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, etc
   

What will you need to be successful?

Our successful candidate will be a lifelong learner, and educated with a graduate degree in a suitable subject area such as Data Science or similar. Along with your strong technical background in AI and data science, you will have a proven track record of applying AI to clinical research and the generation of clinical evidence. You will be an expert in appropriate programming languages such as Python, Spark, and R, version control systems like Git, and in modern data systems, architectures, and standards.
