About the Team
The Serverless Compute Infrastructure team is part of the core Technical Infrastructure engineering team of ByteDance R&D. The team innovates, designs and implements a Kubernetes-like cloud-native Orchestration and cluster management system to host various online/offline workloads across ByteDance business lines, including microservices, big data processing, machine learning, LLM training and inference, distributed storage services, and edge computing platforms for ByteDance. With the super-fast growing ByteDance's business and its fleet of machines across Multi-Clouds hosting hundreds of millions of containers and applications, it's critical to deliver a world-class serverless compute system with high agility, large scalability, high availability, and extreme performance assurance.

As new AI/ML workloads are emerging around the world, we are hiring Software Engineers to accelerate the innovation on the next-gen Cloud-Native Infrastructure and Orchestration framework to enable cost-efficient and easy-to-use AI/ML solutions. As a development engineer of the team, you will have various opportunities to learn cutting-edge cloud-native and k8s technologies in a hyper-scale environment, work with super innovative and open-minded engineers across teams with diverse and inclusive cultures, and challenge yourself to develop a complex world-class k8s system and grow your career in a multi-cloud era. Also, with the goal of growing compute infrastructure in overseas regions, including North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, you will have the opportunities of working closely with leaders from ByteDance’s global business units to ensure that we continue to scale and optimize our infrastructure globally.

Responsibilities
- Build cutting edge application orchestration framework to host various types of production workloads, e.g., service management, big data jobs, distributed machine learning systems, and distributed storage services, edge computing and Public Cloud
- Build complex container-based cluster management to manage our hyper-scale resources and workloads, with extremely high-performance, scalability, and resilience
- Design and build a flexible, unified, and distributed resources/tasks scheduling framework to meet various new application requirements
- Design and build cluster federation, scaling, and co-location solutions to optimize resource utilization in multi-cloud environments
- Design, architect and implement next-gen Cloud-Native Infrastructure to enable cost-efficient, easy-to-use and secure ML platforms for latest ML workloads including but not limited to LLM training and inference that reduce time-to-market (TTM) for ByteDance customers.
- Write high quality, product level code that is easy to maintain and test.
- Keep up with the latest state-of-the-art in the open source and the research community in AI/ML, LLM and systems, and implementing and extending best practices.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
- B.S./M.S, degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related area with 3+ years of relevant industry experience; new graduates with Ph.D. degree and strong publication records can be an exception.
- Solid understanding of at least one of the following fields: Unix/Linux environments, distributed and parallel systems, high-performance networking systems, developing large scale software systems
- Proven experience designing, architecting and building cloud and ML infrastructure related but not limited to resource management, allocation, job scheduling and monitoring.
- Familiarity with container and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Proficiency in at least one major programming language such as Python, Go, C++, Rust, and Java.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in one large scale cluster management systems, e.g., Kubernetes, Ray, Yarn, or Mesos
- Experience in large scale resources and tasks scheduling development
- Project experience in application scaling, workload co-location, and isolation enhancement
- Experience in container runtime and relevant projects, e.g., Containerd, Kata-Container, gVisor, or x-containers
- Experience working on GPUs/CUDA and/or LLM engines (e.g., vLLM, TensorRT-LLM).
- Experience with a public cloud provider (AWS, Azure and GCP), and their ML services (e.g., AWS SageMaker, Azure ML, GCP Vertex AI).
- Proficiency in ML systems (e.g., Ray, DeepSpeed), and deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
- Great communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and across engineering teams.
- Passionate about system efficiency, quality, performance and scalability

Job Information

【For Pay Transparency】Compensation Description (Annually)

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $184300 - $337250 annually.​

Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.​

Benefits may vary depending on the nature of employment and the country work location. Employees have day one access to medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) savings plan with company match, paid parental leave, short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, among others. Employees also receive 10 paid holidays per year, 10 paid sick days per year and 17 days of Paid Personal Time (prorated upon hire with increasing accruals by tenure).​
