Optimization & Control Engineer

About the role 

Join Fortum’s Data Science & Optimization team as a key player in our digitalization and AI journey. You will develop Hiven, our market-leading demand response solution, by creating efficient optimization and control solutions that meet customer needs and electricity market regulations.

Your responsibilities include: 

• Developing scalable forecasting, optimization, and steering algorithms 

• Creating aggregation methods for scalability 

• Designing tractable approximations when necessary 

• Collaborating with backend and frontend teams on interfaces 

• Supporting data scientists and ML engineers 

• Learning about power system stability and testing requirements 

• Coaching the team on system stability, tractability, and performance 

You will work closely with designers, developers, data scientists, and testers to achieve these goals. 

The positions can either be based in Sweden and Solna or Finland and Espoo. 

About you 

We believe you are the perfect fit if you have a passion for innovation and a strong background in engineering and computer science.

Here is in detail what we are looking for: 

• A master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience 

• Over 4 years of experience in stochastic control and optimization 

• More than 3 years of solid software engineering experience, preferably in Python 

• At least 2 years of experience working with cloud solutions, especially AWS 

• Knowledgeable in statistics and data science with at least 1 year of hands-on experience 

• Familiarity with GitHub Actions service deployment, containers, and DevOps practices 

• A firm grasp of software engineering principles such as SOLID and clean code 

• Excellent communication skills and a keen interest in the energy sector 

• Full professional proficiency in written and spoken English 

In addition to these core competencies, it would be a great advantage if you also have experience in the following areas: 

• Machine Learning and Generative AI 

• Electricity and flexibility markets 

• Electrical vehicle chargers or home energy management systems 

• Forecast models and parameter tuning 

• Data engineering, including architecture development and deployment 

• IT security, high availability, cybersecurity, maintenance, and support 

• Data storage and maintenance methods 

• Message brokers and microservice architectures 

• Basic knowledge of OCPP, MQTT, and IoT devices 

• Working in an Agile environment
