About the Role


The VP, Engineering, Legal Tech AI will collaborate with product management, other senior technology leaders and key stakeholders to define core AI capabilities and architect scalable solutions for our legal platforms, operating as the single accountable technology leader responsible for: 

  • Developing technology strategy, driving roadmap execution, and leading a large product engineering organization for a globally adopted, high-value portfolio or products, including the HighQ collaboration and platform and the Contract Express document automation.
  • Partnering with product management to define our AI strategy for Co-Counsel for Transaction Experiences. 
  • Building and inspiring a high performing team of managers and Directors and provides the thought leadership and technical expertise to achieve business and operational results. 
  • Driving iterative execution of our AI-enabled legal automation strategy to provide rapid customer value and impact within HighQ and Contract Express through integrated Co-Counsel experiences across legal technology platforms and solutions. 
  • Helping to adapt and drive the global location, talent and workforce planning objectives for the Legal Technology organization. 
  • Using data-driven techniques to resolve conflicting priorities, providing transparency and visibility of program statuses and platform health, ensuring customer satisfaction through the efficient delivery of agreed upon business and technical deliverables on time and within quality expectations. 
  • Collaborating with external and internal stakeholders at all levels, including business teams, product owners, and technology teams to drive products and processes.  
  • Acting as point of contact and primary point of escalation in resolving stakeholder issues and removing roadblocks. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads a geographically diverse team of engineers to build scalable, secure, and reliable AI-enabled legal products and solutions while managing all resources associated with development initiatives across the US, India, UK, Toronto and Mexico, including 3rd party suppliers and strategic acquisitions. 
  • Advances the AI strategy with internal and external stakeholders, customers and partners by providing thought leadership on platforms, standards, tools, and architecture patterns. 
  • Evaluates and assesses necessary emerging technology capabilities to enable product strategy and vision 
  • Creates, prioritizes, and executes product releases that ensure the consistent delivery of AI-enabled legal automation capabilities that advances the position of our portfolio of products in the market. 
  • Ensures a rigorous engineering culture and the of quality product and solutions through continuous improvements to our engineering standards and Ways of Working. Builds and tracks appropriate performance metrics and makes enhancements to existing metrics and reports to support data-informed decision making. Sets appropriate non-functional focus based on business strategy and risk. 
  • Accountable for ensuring the delivery of the expected business and commercial results, per scope, budget, timeliness, and quality metrics.  
  • Responsible for the selection and day to day management of third-party delivery partners, and improving efficiency and value obtained from those partners. 
  • Grows organizational talent through recruiting, coaching, mentoring, and retaining key contributors as well as through modeling strong leadership behaviors. 
  • Collaborates with senior leaders from other internal departments to formulate recommendations and actions to achieve business outcomes. 
  • Promotes good engineering practices and appropriate focus on non-functional requirements 
  • Keeps current on technology and architecture trends and provides thought leadership on platforms, standards, tools, architecture patterns. 
  • Enables strong cross-product synergies to support and motivate opportunities to cross-sell at major customers. 
  • Keeps current on technology and architecture trends.
  • Leads projects with high visibility and significant risk to achieve organization-wide milestones and objectives. Provides leadership and direction. 

About You

The ideal candidate for the VP, Engineering LegalTech AI role possesses the following: 

Professional Skills & Competencies: 

  • Overall 15+ years of software engineering experience with minimum 10 years in leading large technology programs and focusing on high performance delivery, customer value, business growth and operational effectiveness. 
  • Deep understanding of AI/ML technologies, including generative AI, LLMs, and their practical applications   
  • Expertise in delivering innovative technical solutions in complex environments, including building new technology platforms and leveraging techniques to accelerate program execution targeted to faster value creation and quicker ROI. 
  • Must have solid understanding of modern software development practices, operations and security principles, architecting systems for non-functional requirements such as disaster recovery, high availability, system telemetry, security, infrastructure as code, automation, CI/CD, quality, scalability, API, and SRE. 
  • Experience designing, building, and operating high volume, client facing cloud products. 
  • Ability to build and manage financial plans to meet organizational objectives. 
  • Ability to make difficult decisions and to manage through change with appreciation for the impacts and consequences of those changes. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. 
  • Experience working in matrix organization. 
  • Experience leading global teams. 


Location:
This role will be based in one of our hub locations in Zug, Switzerland; Toronto, Canada; London, UK or New York City, USA.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $213,710 - $396,890. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
