Globus develops and provides critical services that support scientific research for governmental, academic, and commercial organizations in a wide range of disciplines including life sciences, physics, and astronomy. We develop, operate, and sell commercial-quality, cloud-based software application and platform services used by 10s of thousands of researchers to manage their large–and growing–data management challenges. We have offices located in the heart of downtown Chicago and remote employees who work-from-home. Globus, together with Globus Labs, a research group within the University of Chicago, and part of the Data Science and Learning Division at Argonne National Labs, develop and deploy cutting edge technologies to solve new challenges facing the scientific community and enable break-through scientific discoveries.


Job Summary

As a senior member of the Globus Labs software development team, the focus of this position will be to prototype, design, develop, and deploy new software services to help scientists and researchers publish, share, and make accessible their data and AI models, as well as to solve problems in domains ranging from materials science, chemistry, catalysis, x-ray science, and more. We’re looking for highly skilled and experienced full stack software engineers to build and support services and systems that will be used by thousands of researchers in pursuit of open data initiatives supported by the NSF, NIST, DOE, and the Materials Genome Initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architectural decisions and implement sophisticated systems for publishing and managing complex, interconnected datasets across scientific domains, with a focus on enabling cross-domain data integration and advanced querying capabilities.

  • Develop, manage, and deploy data infrastructure services to support various projects.

  • Establish and nurture strategic partnerships with program directors, research leaders, and institutional stakeholders.

  • Shape and drive UChicago's strategic vision for AI/ML integration with national data infrastructure, including identifying emerging technologies and developing roadmaps for their adoption.

  • Support large-scale, multi-phase projects from inception through deployment, managing cross-functional teams and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

  • Conceive and execute innovative internal ventures, securing resources and building teams to explore novel approaches in distributed data infrastructure and AI/ML integration.

  • Architecture and Design:  Contributes to the definition and documentation of requirements, architecture and design of secure, scalable, asynchronous, data access services, based on expanded knowledge of principles of API design, asynchronous processes, service deployment and delivering highly available services.

  • Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical  improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met. 

  • Utilizes technical knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, including public cloud offerings from Amazon  Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field.

  • Masters of Science in computer science.

Experience:

  • Knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience.

  • Proficiency in software development with Python and SQL.

  • Cloud & Infrastructure working experience.

  • Knowledge of SQL, Databases, and C, Haskell technologies.

  • Experience with AI/ML models for scientific applications.

  • Experience with Built and RESTful backend API using FAST API and PostgreSQL.

  • Experience with cloud computing.

  • Experience with Globus software.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Use standard software development applications and tools.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with Python web framework (e.g. Flask/Django).

  • Knowledge of SQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite).

  • Unit testing and continuous integration tools (e.g. Github Actions, FastAPI, git).

  • Knowledge of open source project contribution.

Working Conditions

  • This job requires occasional evening or weekend hours.

  • This job is a hybrid position with occasional attendance at in-person meetings required. 

  • This job may require occasional travel to attend workshops and conferences.
