Snapshot

We are seeking a Research Engineer & Prompt Scientist to leverage prompting, fine-tuning, and other strategies for eliciting optimal model outputs from Google’s generative AI models, across data modalities and domains. This work is critical to ensuring that our internal and external users can maximize the utility of Google’s AI-powered tools, and translate technical progress into tangible product outcomes. This role involves improving prompting workflows, standardizing prompt building blocks & libraries, and developing bespoke tools & infrastructure to scale best practices for using GenAI tools to Google’s partners.

The role

Prompt engineering is a new and rapidly evolving discipline. We welcome candidates from a wide range of technical backgrounds, recognizing that relevant experience can come from many fields. A successful candidate will have a strong software engineering background, but may also be well-versed in other areas like developer relations, instructional design, product management, education, technical writing, and more. Key responsibilities

  • Evaluate & implement methods for achieving optimal performance from generative AI models, with a focus on prompting
  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers to explore new prompting & fine-tuning strategies, and evaluate their effectiveness in product use cases.
  • Design, implement, and optimize prompting workflows for various generative applications including conversational agents, content & media generation, and autorater/evaluation systems.
  • Develop and maintain a library of reusable prompt components and templates for generic, and PA-specific use cases.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in generative AI & prompting, and contribute to the development of best practices.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Prompt Scientist at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

Required Skills

  • Software engineering skills; proficiency in Python & other relevant programming languages.
  • Experience prototyping, building, and shipping software.
  • Experience in prompt engineering and optimization techniques.
  • Deep understanding of common architectures for large language & media generation models.
  • Substantial experience with machine learning frameworks & libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face, etc.
  • Creativity and the ability to experiment with different approaches to a given problem, in a rigorous and hypothesis-driven way.

Preferred Skills In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • PhD, or other relevant research experience.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or publications in relevant fields.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $182,000 - $215,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
