The role reports into the Group CIO and encompasses envisioning data-enabled strategies, enabling all forms of business outcomes through analytics and AI. It is responsible for data and analytics governance, accountable for data and analytics platforms, data-driven innovation, artificial intelligence and the resulting business outcomes of their adoption. The Head of Data & Analytics will be a leader in the Chaucer Technology Group who will take ownership of driving Chaucer’s Data and Analytics (D&A) strategy and capability maturity. This role will be responsible for proactively sourcing opportunities in partnership with the business, to drive value creation by leveraging both, Chaucer’s data assets internally and data ecosystem externally. Lead data-driven transformation. Raise the organisation’s levels of data literacy, fostering the creation of a data-driven culture. Get data-driven and AI capabilities prominently onto the strategic business agenda of the executive.

Job Description

  • Chaucer has just started on Cloud based Data Platform implementation. The Head of Data and Analytics will be responsible for leading the implementation and delivering value from it across the business. 

  • Champion data culture across the organisation, increasing the level of awareness, understanding and engagement with the concepts and practicalities.

  • Provide great leadership for the data department, recruit the required talent and manage the pipeline of talent within Chaucer. Drive the culture and engagement scores in a positive direction.

  • Work with the Group Executive and other leaders to align the data delivery to the business strategy and goals.

  • Oversee development, deployment and maintenance of Chaucer’s data and analytics capabilities, architecture and platforms, as well as a roadmap for its future development, ensuring that it matches and supports business needs.

  • Lead Chaucer in realising the digital business led data-driven innovation, including investigation, adoption and exploitation of artificial intelligence.

  • Lead research, strategy creation and development of new data products or services

  • Identify new kinds, types and sources of trusted data to enable business value innovation throughout the organisation.

  • Define processes for the effective integration of existing and new data.

  • Develop, manage, allocate and govern the annual budget for the department.

  • Evolve and mature Chaucer’s data and analytics strategy and governance forums, working closely with Executive leadership and business data owners. Chair data forums as required.

  • People Leadership - Create and lead an inclusive environment that values individual differences to leverage diversity.

  • Connect with stakeholders to identify unmet needs that expose new opportunities, supporting redesigning business processes and interactions as part of the digital transformation.

  • Create an optimal portfolio of business outcomes, contributing the essential data and analytics capabilities necessary to run a successful organisation.

  • Align the priorities of the teams to that of the business strategy and goals

Outcomes and Impact:

  • Track the potential and business impact of data and analytics by linking use cases to business outcomes

  • Quantify the risks involved and mitigated with your D&A by looking at regulatory compliance and data ethics (e.g., personally identifiable information, reputational impact, compliance fines).

  • Track the time from insight to action by monitoring how long it takes before D&A insights are acted upon

  • Measure data quality by assessing the datasets related to your business domain

  • Track data literacy levels

Regulatory Responsibilities

  • Lead regulatory and compliance programs related to data and analytics assets in collaboration with legal, compliance and assurance teams.

  • Ensure that the data used for financial reporting and to support legal requirements is valid, reliable, traceable, timely, available, secure and consistent.

  • Organise and chair a data and analytics governance council.

  • Oversee definition, management and promotion of enterprise data and analytics principles, policies and programs for stewardship, advocacy and custodianship of data and analytics, including data quality and interoperability (in concert with legal, information security, and corporate risk and compliance offices).

  • Collaborate with the Information Security Officer and Data Privacy Officer to create policies and controls for the appropriate protection of information assets. Protection should encompass a defined information life cycle, from acquisition or creation to end of life destruction and disposal procedures.

  • Collaborate with Group Executives (e.g. CUO/CRO/CFO/COO/CIO) to define and execute expectations and responsibilities for data, in order to evolve and institutionalise behaviours for the appropriate use of information. Account for changing security requirements, privacy needs, ethical values, societal expectations and cultural norms.

  • Define, manage and ensure an adequate information trust model, controls for master data and metadata management, including reference data.

  • Ensure that business reports derived from controlled data are consistent and representative of the true state of the business.

  • Measure master data and reference data for compliance to policy, standards and conceptual models.

  • Assure the deployment and management of data quality monitoring practices.

  • Ensure the timely execution of independent audits, including appropriate audit controls for data and analytics that serve as the source material for regulatory reports.

  • Proven track record of leading complex, multidisciplinary talented teams in new and BAU endeavors in delivering solutions. Ability to balance team and individual responsibilities, build teams and consensus, get things done through others not directly under their supervision, and work ethically and with integrity.

  • Excellent business acumen and interpersonal skills: Able to work across business lines at a senior level to influence and effect change to achieve common goals.

  • Communication and storytelling: Creating consistent value-oriented storylines for better understanding and execution of the D&A Strategy. Ability to effectively drive business, culture and technology change in a dynamic and complex operating environment.

  • Comfort with public speaking and the ability to creatively and concisely express ideas to business and technical audiences.

  • Familiarity with business information generation and analysis methods

  • Teamwork across the Chaucer group working with business teams as well as your own team and other IT teams.

  • Information strategy experience — Experience in strategic technology planning and execution, and policy development and maintenance.

  • Influencing and emotional intelligence to explain digital concepts and technologies to business leaders, and business concepts to technologists.

Expertise

  • Experience implementing a cloud based data platform

  • Business domain knowledge in Speciality Insurance.

  • Significant leadership experience in leading Data & Analytics cross-functional teams and enterprise wide Data & Analytics programs.

  • Business and financial acumen understanding business concepts, practices and business domain language of speciality (re)insurance to engage in problem-solving sessions and discuss business issues in stakeholder language.

  • Business process transformation: the ability to understand how D&A can help redesign the way work is done and track how impactful the changes are.

  • Business data: understanding the structure, ownership and use within an organisation

  • Significant senior leadership experience in leading cross-functional teams, multidisciplinary environments and enterprisewide data and analytics programs, operating and influencing effectively across the organisation and within complex contexts.

  • Experience in integrating complex, cross-corporate processes and information strategies, and/or designing strategic metrics and scorecards.Experience in formulating and implementing Data Strategies.

  • Strategy and management consulting.

Technical skills

  • Experience with Power BI, Snowflake, Attacama, Fivetran or similar.

  • Agile – Scrum/Kanban, sprint planning using JIRA, TFS,Azure DevOps or similar

  • Experience with SQL, Python or R (other languages welcomed)

  • Experience with data quality monitoring, tooling selection and deployment

  • Master data management

  • Experience with Data science or leading a Data science practice

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure Data & Analytics platform

Education

  •  A bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration; science technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); computer science; data science; information systems or related and equivalent work experience.
