General Purpose
The Senior Risk Analytics Specialist is responsible for leading data-driven initiatives to mitigate operational and environmental risks to electric utility assets and customers. Focus on utilizing advanced data analytics and geospatial data science to address a wide range of hazards, including wildfire mitigation, winter storm response, flooding, and other operational risks.
This role is critical for ensuring the safety, reliability, and resilience of PacifiCorp’s operations by integrating data science methodologies with risk management strategies. Work closely with cross-functional teams including System Operations, Field Engineering, Wildfire Mitigation Program Delivery, and Emergency Management to create and implement models that identify, assess, and mitigate risks with a focus on mapping environmental and weather-related hazards based on the potential probability and impact of an event.
Responsibilities
• Conduct highly complex research studies and geospatial analyses in areas of specialized data science to support company objectives including wildfire risk modeling and analysis, electric service reliability analysis, winter storm response, and ad hoc projects in support of electric operations program teams.
• Support data science projects, processes, or systems over the life cycle of the project, including project identification, scope development, implementation, and long-term operations and maintenance.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to analyze complex problems, identify issues, innovate, and deliver solutions consistent with schedules established.
• Provide technical risk analytics expertise across business units to support functions such as wildfire mitigation and reliability within the T&D Operations organization.
• Develop detailed computational analysis, including geospatial data science, computer modeling, and scripting and tool development, and integrate methods and products within and across company software products.
• Serve as the Company expert in the discipline and provide authoritative consultation and recommendations to senior management.
• Engage with external partners in government, industry, collegiate and other applicable associations or work groups which could influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.
• Support data literacy and scripting knowledge development across the team.
• Contribute to regulatory filings including wildfire mitigation plans, responses to request for information from regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders, and written testimony for regulatory proceedings.
• Leverage large data sets including weather, environmental, outage, vegetation, and grid attributes to inform long term risk analysis and aid in decision making.
• Develops presentations for senior management to recommend and implement changes to meet company goals.
• Strong customer service focus.
Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Analysis, Data Science, Geographic Information Science, or Geospatial Intelligence, or related field from an accredited college/university.
• Experience developing risk maps for various environmental hazards such as wildfires, flooding, or large storms using large data from a combination of public and propriety data sources and models.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience in the power/utility/energy industry, wildfire or environmental risk analytics, or related professional experience.
• Experience with time series modeling and forecasting.
• Experience in Python (or related language) and associated libraries for machine learning.
• Experience with R (or related language) for statistical analysis and data visualization.
• Experience using ESRI toolsets including ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.
• Experience utilizing Python geospatial packages such as matplotlib, shapely, and other relevant spatial tools.
• Knowledge of SQL query construction and optimization.
• Exceptional technical writing skills.
• Ability to communicate complex data in a simple, actionable way through visualizations.
• Demonstrated ability to review scientific literature and incorporate knowledge into ongoing projects.
• Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally and support multiple departments.
• Knowledge of industry best practices for data science, geospatial analysis, and data governance.
Preferences
- Experience with wildfire science or wildfire-related analytics use cases strongly preferred.
- Experience working with public utility commissions (PUCs) and their requirements/regulations.
- MS or PhD in Data Science, Geographic Information Science, Risk Analysis, Geospatial Intelligence, or related field.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Understanding of the Company’s business and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
