Hexcel is currently seeking a Research and Technology Materials Scientist for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

  • Identify and carry out appropriate analysis techniques to characterize chemical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber and its composites.
  • Develop new mechanical/chemical/microstructural methods for analysis of carbon fiber and precursor materials to elucidate critical properties and describe structure-property relationships.
  • Develop material models of carbon fiber that provide insights on improving critical properties of composites.
  • Define key process and material parameters that must be manipulated or controlled to enable new product development.
  • Provide plant and customer support through identification and execution of appropriate mechanical techniques for specific queries.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Material Science or related field OR a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Material Science or related field with at least three years of laboratory experience in a research environment.  Experience in material development, polymer characterization, and/or characterization method development is preferred.
  • Coding (e.g., Python, MATLAB), quantitative image analysis, and/or machine learning techniques for materials image analysis are preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional and scientific journals, general business periodicals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, technical methods, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to develop new mechanical/chemical/microstructural analyses from scientific literature, patents, and other written sources.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard physical and chemical techniques, including spectroscopic techniques, microscopy, and potentiometry. The ability to appropriately apply these techniques to research problems.
  • Ability to apply design of experiment concepts to hypothesis testing. Ability to perform measurement system analyses on new and existing chemical techniques.
  • Ability to independently apply and implement mathematical methods for interpretation and manipulation of analytical data.
  • Ability to apply statistical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to apply scientific methods and judgment to completion of assignments or directions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving tangible and intangible factors in standardized and non-standardized assignments and situations.
