Position SummaryA full-time Bioinformaticist position is available in the Brain Tumor Center (BTC) @WashU, located in the newly opened Neuroscience Research Building at WashU Medicine in St. Louis. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our research team.

The incumbent will work on assignments of moderate scope and complexity. Will implement, run, customize, optimize, and benchmark data analysis pipelines as well as data visualization for single-cell assays (e.g., single-cell DNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq), high-resolution spatial transcriptomic and proteomic profiling datasets from a wide variety of common brain tumors. Will also perform integrative data analyses, and prepare results for oral presentation, scientific publications, and grant applications.

Uses skills as an experienced bioinformatics programmer with a broad understanding of computational algorithms; identifies and resolves a wide range of issues/software bugs. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates independently.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Designs, develops, and implements:

  • Algorithms and computer software for omics-based data sets [high-throughput, massively parallel genomic/proteomic/clinical].

  • Designs and maintains web pages and databases. Builds and maintains web applications that allow researchers outside of the laboratory to access resources.

  • Designs, develops, debugs and utilizes computer programs. Develops bioinformatic tools for genomic data analysis using statistics, machine learning, data mining, and software.

  • Data management and analysis solutions that aid in the storage, investigation, and dissemination of large data sets.

  • Independent research projects, including design of research protocols and development of procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.

  • Performs complex systems analysis of data and writes interpretative reports.

  • Evaluates commercial and academic bioinformatics software.

  • Trains other researchers on the everyday use of analysis software and research databases.

  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting of methods, data, and results.

  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects; suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field.
  • Working knowledge of: modern biology and applicable field of research, genomics, epigenetics, biostatistics, applications programming and web development, application and data security concepts.
  • Experience in analyzing next-generation genomic data, single-cell and/or proteomic data, popular deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures, statistics and programming languages such as Python, Perl, R, or Go/Rust, and databases.
  • Proficiency with relational databases and programming languages used in the development of web-based MIS systems is a plus (e.g. SQL Server, HTML, Javascript, PhP).
  • Working project management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self motivated.
  • Ability to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.

Salary Range$55,200.00 - $100,000.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
