Senior Security Software Engineer, Data Security Foundations

The Role

Data Security Foundations (DSF) is responsible for securing Block’s analytics and AI data platforms. We do this through a combination of hands-on software development, co-building and co-designing, and consultation, and we partner closely with our data platform counterparts to achieve shared goals around data security. DSF provides capabilities that eliminate entire categories of risk, spanning our data platforms, whether they’re built in-house or provided by a third party. We believe data security is inherently multi-disciplinary, and we bring our expertise in fields like identity and access management and cloud security to our work, while collaborating deeply with our peer teams to ensure alignment across all of Block’s security goals.

We are looking for experienced security software engineers, but candidates with a security mindset and experience working in the ML or data space are strongly encouraged to apply!

You Will

• Design and build software capabilities and systems to continuously enhance the security posture of our analytics and AI data platforms, including our data warehouses, ML feature serving systems, model hosting and development tooling, and beyond!
• Partner with data platform teams and governance, risk, and compliance experts to understand security gaps, and collaborate on the best way to remediate them
• Enrich our understanding of our data platforms’ security posture by spotting risks and documenting them as part of Block’s risk governance program
• Leverage insights into our cloud infrastructure and data warehouses to observe and measure our data platforms’ security posture
• Make high-quality and resilient software changes that minimize operational burden for our team and partners

You Have

•  5+ years of experience as a security software engineer, backend software engineer, or ML or data infrastructure engineer
•  A threat actor mindset, or experience spotting and solving security problems in the data space
• Experience with machine learning and big data platforms and tools, including building first-party or bespoke ML infrastructure
• Familiarity with machine learning and data science workflows, processes, and goals
• Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders across teams, verticals, and business units, and partnering with other teams to achieve great security outcomes
• Excitement about machine learning and AI, and a willingness to experiment with the same AI tools our internal customers use
• Empathy for our internal customers and their needs and goals
• Experience creating and maintaining team processes that allow us to maximize our effectiveness across multiple modes of working

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
