PUR operates within the dynamic and rapidly evolving sector of environmental consultancy services and nature-based solutions markets. These markets are closely linked with the voluntary carbon markets (VCM) when NbS projects produce carbon credits that can be traded on the VCM. The NbS market has recently gained traction as society recognizes the invaluable services provided by nature and the need to preserve, restore, and harness these services to mitigate and adapt to environmental challenges. To be considered a nature-based solution, projects must effectively address real societal challenges and offer strong environmental, economic, and social benefits for local communities.

Market KPIs:

• If combined with deep decarbonization efforts, NbS projects could provide up to 30% of the mitigation needed to limit global warming to 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels by 2030 (World Economic Forum, 2023).

• NbS project credits make up the largest volumes of carbon credits available in the VCM and continue to attract the most investment, with $9 billion invested between 2020 and 2022 (Sylvera, 2023).

• In 2021, the VCM was estimated to be worth $2 billion, four times its 2020 value. By 2030, the market is expected to reach $10 to $40 billion (BCG, 2022).

• 5,307 companies have set science-based targets—a 4.2x increase since 2022—and are a significant driver of demand within the NbS and VCM markets (SBTi, 2024).

• To meet their SBTi targets and mitigate their climate-risk exposure, organizations around the world will need to invest in the type of projects PUR develops. Today, very few market players have a proven track record in NbS project implementation, and PUR is therefore well-positioned to benefit from the market’s expansion.

PUR is recruiting a Lead Data Engineer based in Paris to join our international Data/IT team. PUR is scaling and to do so, we are redesigning our cloud-native stack, building a data platform that balances innovation with operational excellence using a Gitops approach and infrastructure as code. 

As Lead Data Engineer, you will be responsible for creating and building alongside our team the architecture to organize and connect data, orchestrate processes, create MLOps pipelines while guaranteeing data availability, quality, security and aligning with cloud best practices, as well as managing and building a talented team of 3 other Data Engineers. 

Our data platform is undergoing a fundamental architectural transformation, as we are shifting from traditional monolithic and batch-oriented systems to a dynamic, event-driven ecosystem. This paradigm represents more than a technological upgrade, it's a strategic redesign of how data flows, transforms, and generates value in real-time for stakeholders globally: data managers, commercial & operations teams and Exco members. 

Success in this role requires demonstrating ability to bridge technical depth with strategic vision, transforming data into solutions that empower decision-makers across the entire organization by deploying new apps, new insights, while maintaining existing solutions. 

The Data team is key to improving our impact, so you will join a purpose-driven, dynamic and growing team around the world.

Your responsibilities will be, but not limited to :

Data quality & management :

• Continue to improve Pur’s data platform, being able to expand on top of what’s already in use.

• Propose and improve data quality management rules & monitor data quality processes  Maintain and expand CI/CD practices.

• Maintain and improve data tools and understanding in the team & company.

• Support infrastructure for Machine Learning Ops in the medium-long run Monitoring, reporting & technical management.

Monitoring, reporting & technical management :

• Organize developer huddles, break tasks, conduct agile ceremonies in the team. 

• Be familiar with Git best practices and promote Git Workflows for the team. 

• Feed reporting tools and manage monitoring tools. 

• Lead data exchanges with clients and partners as the technical representative, supported by the Operation Manager.

Requirements

We are looking for someone with :

• Experience having built complete data pipelines: 

building and connecting data warehouses or datalakes, ETLs, and orchestrators for multiple data types and applications, while also plugging these structures to Data Visualization solutions. (at least 5 years in Data Engineering, with at least 1 in a Lead position) 

• Experience with cloud-based environment management, preferably in Azure

• Experience dealing with “Production services”, which is (but not limited to): 

o Being at ease with deployment processes

o Being at ease using logging & monitoring solutions 

o Knowledge of essential security best practice 

o Awareness about networking o Experience with crisis situation management 

o Sensitive to cost management 

• Advanced skills in Python 

• Advanced skills in SQL 

• Hands-on experience using Docker 

• Hands-on experience using IAC, preferably Pulumi 

• High tolerance for ambiguity; ability to thrive in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment; International experience is a strong plus

• Strong sense of accountability and commitment/follow-through

• Adept at giving and receiving feedback

• Strong communication skills (clear, precise, and constructive)

• Looks for impact by making decisions based on facts and critical thinking

• Dynamic, autonomous, with an interest in sustainability/climate issues

• Able to work at the Paris office at least 3x a week

• Fluency in English & French
