Bioinformatician I (Dr. Rodriguez’s Lab) - Microbiology

United States

The Rodriguez Lab investigates how the human genome and epigenome shape the adaptive immune system, focusing on their impact on antibody responses during infections, vaccination, and autoimmunity. Leveraging large-scale biobank datasets, we explore the genetic factors underlying disease susceptibility linked to antibody genes. Our research also includes in-depth molecular and cellular analyses to uncover the genetic basis of antibody responses to pathogens. To advance this work, we develop cutting-edge bioinformatics tools, including pangenome and personalized genome analyses, moving beyond traditional reference-based approaches. These approaches are necessary due to the highly polymorphic nature (for example structural variant hotspots) of immune loci.

Our research employs a diverse array of omics technologies, such as long-read sequencing (PacBio and Oxford Nanopore), short-read sequencing, ATAC-seq, Hi-C, BCR-sequencing, and ChIP-seq.

We are currently seeking a bioinformatician to lead and contribute to innovative projects in this exciting field.

  • Conduct comprehensive computational analyses of diverse '-omic' datasets to support research objectives.
  • Develop high-quality data visualizations and analyses for use in presentations, manuscripts, and publications.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and optimization of novel software tools for processing, analyzing, and visualizing high-throughput sequencing data.
  • May give presentations both inside and outside of the institution.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field is required. Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related discipline is preferred. M.S. preferred
  • 3 years experience required
  • Proficiency in Python, Bash, and Unix/Linux environments.
  • Hands-on experience with the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, such as BCR-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, or long-read sequencing.
  • Familiarity with genome or epigenome data analysis.
  • Experience in developing or applying bioinformatics tools for large-scale genomic datasets.
  • Preferred BioBank experience.

“About the Mount Sinai Health System:

Mount Sinai Health System is one of the largest academic medical systems in the New York metro area, with more than 43,000 employees working across eight hospitals, more than 400 outpatient practices, more than 300 labs, a school of nursing, and a leading school of medicine and graduate education. Mount Sinai advances health for all people, everywhere, by taking on the most complex health care challenges of our time — discovering and applying new scientific learning and knowledge; developing safer, more effective treatments; educating the next generation of medical leaders and innovators; and supporting local communities by delivering high-quality care to all who need it. Through the integration of its hospitals, labs, and schools, Mount Sinai offers comprehensive health care solutions from birth through geriatrics, leveraging innovative approaches such as artificial intelligence and informatics while keeping patients’ medical and emotional needs at the center of all treatment. The Health System includes approximately 7,400 primary and specialty care physicians; 13 joint-venture outpatient surgery centers throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester, Long Island, and Florida; and more than 30 affiliated community health centers. We are consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals, receiving high "Honor Roll" status, and are highly ranked: No. 1 in Geriatrics and top 20 in Cardiology/Heart Surgery, Diabetes/Endocrinology, Gastroenterology/GI Surgery, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology/Lung Surgery, Rehabilitation, and Urology. New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai is ranked No. 12 in Ophthalmology. U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” ranks Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital among the country’s best in several pediatric specialties. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is ranked No. 14 nationwide in National Institutes of Health funding and in the 99th percentile in research dollars per investigator according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Newsweek’s “The World’s Best Smart Hospitals” ranks The Mount Sinai Hospital as No. 1 in New York and in the top five globally, and Mount Sinai Morningside in the top 20 globally.
