The Position

We are looking for an outstanding data engineer with experience in multi-omics end to end processing & analysis to help us identify novel therapies for our patients. As a Principal Scientist in the Global Computational Biology and Digital Sciences (gCBDS) department, you will be working in close collaboration with the Computational Biology teams. Our aim is to identify treatments for portfolio indications using state-of-the-art computational methods to drive target identification and ultimately delivering novel therapies for our patients. Your role in this mission would be providing the necessary infrastructure for the delivery of downstream multimodal omics data (eg, proteomics, single cell RNA seq, spatial transcriptomics, bulk RNA seq). Embedded in Boehringer Ingelheim’s growing gCBDS department, you will have an impact on Research & Development, actively contributing to the discovery of breakthrough therapies that will increase human health. As part of our team, you not only contribute to creating maintainable and sustainable data systems and data pipelines but also propose, design and implement the necessary infrastructure to efficiently generate, process and trace standardized data.   The Computational Biology Data and Infrastructure (CBDI) department focuses on processing data streams and supporting various therapeutic areas in close collaboration with gCBDS teams. We work in close collaboration with the Genomics Laboratory. The synergy between the two interdisciplinary teams consisting of lab scientists, technicians, data engineers and data scientists ensures that the generated data are of high-quality and Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR principles). As part of our team, you not only contribute to creating maintainable and sustainable data systems and data pipelines but also propose, design and implement the necessary infrastructure to efficiently generate, process and trace standardized data.   About us: You want to dive deeper and discover how we increase human disease insights? Tasks & responsibilities

  • As a member of the Computational Biology Data and Infrastructure team (CBDI) within our gCBDS department, you will contribute to the generation of standardized and high-quality data assets from sources of omics data.
  • In close collaboration with the computational biology teams, you will support downstream omics data enablement and integration, covering the complete data life cycle from conceptual design to ready-to-use downstream derivative data that adhere to FAIR principles.
  • You will drive value generation by ensuring the delivery of the right data asset to the computational biology teams.
  • As part of an experienced team, you will take ownership of complex data processing pipelines for multimodal omics data sources, and you will contribute to the development of our data assets, including computational biology pipelines creation & optimization and database development.
  • Since data sources can often be external to the company, you will be responsible for setting the standardization processes to homogenize data quality and formats.
  • You will work together with our genomics laboratory to optimize our NGS end to end workflow.
  • Together with our global CBDI community, you will establish global standards in delivering data solutions.
  • You will closely collaborate with different stakeholders to continuously enhance our capabilities for modeling, integrating and processing of data.
  • Furthermore, you will conceptualize and drive the implementation of scalable innovative software solutions for downstream data analysis and visualizations, based on the needs of users within our department.
  • You will contribute to operational excellence by improving our day-to-day departmental processes.

Additional tasks & responsibilities for Principal Scientist

  • As principal scientist you will conceptualize and drive the implementation of scalable innovative software solutions for downstream data analysis and visualizations, based on the needs of users within our department.
  • You will be responsible for the stakeholder management of the computational teams and enable close collaboration by fostering positive interactions.
  • In addition, you will take the lead in large scale projects by proposing innovative solutions & cutting-edge methods to internalized within our infrastructure.

Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computational Biology, Data Science or a related field with several years of relevant experience, preferably in the biotechnology- and / or pharmaceutical industry
  • Extensive experience working with omics data types with a particular focus on data storage, handling, processing, and pipelining of such data for delivery of readily available downstream data
  • Knowledge of data integration concepts such as semantic data integration, data modelling (e.g. ontologies and taxonomies), knowledge graphs and data FAIRification
  • Robust software engineering skills such as testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery paired with excellent programming skills (Python,R, MatLab)
  • Analytical and innovative mindset with profound problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent command of English (verbally and written)

Additional requirements for Principal Scientist

  • Hands-on experience with orchestration frameworks for data processing and analysis pipelines, ideally Nextflow
  • Working experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Extensive knowledge of data management concepts and experience in distributed systems and cloud computing (AWS)
  • Project leadership skills
  • Proven record of large stakeholder management experience
