The Data Transformation team within SP Energy Networks (SPEN) is a multi-discipline team with the responsibility for Data Transformation project strategy, design and delivery – delivering on behalf of both internal and external stakeholders needs – across our distribution and transmission licences following our RIIO-ED2, RIIO-T2 and future regulatory business plans. The team brings together data, engineering and project delivery expertise to develop data solutions in data systems, energy data analytics & insights and AI.
As a Senior Architect within the Data Transformation team, you will lead the Data Science team in the design of sustainable data science solutions to meet the needs of the Data Use Cases brought forward within the SPEN business. Using your Data Science and change management experience, you will collaborate to design and build the SPEN data estate and processes to meet the requirements of our business plans.
What you’ll be doing
- Establish a small technical team across the data science and machine learning operations landscape including:
- Data analytics and automation
- Advanced analytics including Machine Learning (ML) and AI
- ML Operations (MLOps)
- Policies and process
- Steer policy development on data science and data analytics with internal/external stakeholders including external data interfaces.
- Develop MLOps processes to encourage sustainable and scalable model building which encourages value creation through robust ML solutions.
- Lead the development and deployment of analytics solutions that deliver rich, reliable and actionable insights to to various business stakeholders and analytics consumers.
- Apply advanced data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence techniques to extract insights, generate features, and build models that address various business problems and opportunities.
- Collaborate and design data solutions which proactively enable future data analytics and other value-added use cases.
- Ensure the quality, reliability, and observability of data products by implementing data testing, monitoring, and documentation standards and best practices.
- Work with Data Governance and AI committees to ensure compliance with policies.
- Work with Data Engineering and other subject matter expert teams to identify data requirements and integration priorities.
- Work with Business Transformation to create platforms suitable for scalable/advanced analytics and to enable new tools for analytics and data science teams.
- Deliver (with Business Transformation) integrated platforms/architectures to enable a sustainable and scalable Data Estate and enable reporting, business intelligence and advanced analytics such as Machine Learning.
- Engage with and ensure the implementation of industry best practice in data science, skills and capabilities when building the organisational design of the team and related functions.
What you’ll be responsible for
- Responsibility for a CAPEX budget of up to £5million and an OPEX budget of up to £500,000 per annum.
- Leading a specialist team of data scientists and analysts with a team of up to 5 direct and 10 indirect employees (contractors).
- Delivery of technology development initiatives in line with SPEN business plans within CAPEX programme.
- Working and leading within industry forum to steer technology strategy within the networks operation sector.
What you’ll bring
- Strong understanding of AI, Advanced Analytics, MLOps and project delivery methodologies (such as Agile).
- Proven knowledge of responsible and ethical AI practices.
- Proven capabilities in ML in an operational environment and experience with MLOps.
To be successful, as a minimum you will have
- Degree qualified in Data Science, Mathematics or a related discipline.
- Proven track record in developing and delivering analytcs and data change in a large multi disciplined organisation.
- A strong understanding of effective partnership working with 3rd party organisations.
- Advanced Data Modelling: Proficiency in designing, implementing, and evaluating complex machine learning models, statistical algorithms, and predictive analytics to solve business problems.
- Experience with techniques such as regression, classification, clustering, and timeseries analysis.
- Experience with Gen-AI technologies.
- Leadership and Mentorship: Proven ability to lead a team of data scientists, providing guidance, coaching, and fostering a collaborative environment. Experience mentoring team members and promoting a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
- Communication and Storytelling: Excellent communication skills to convey complex data concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Proficiency in data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI) to create compelling narratives from data insights.
- Ability to successfully engage with and influence both internal ScottishPower and Iberdrola groups and regulatory bodies / Industry Working Groups (Ofgem, DESNZ, ENA).
- Knowledge and experience with scalable data systems ad architectures.
- High impact influencing and negotiating skills with respect to technical issues and solution
