Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation's Bridge Division is seeking a highly motivated Bridge Asset Data Management Specialist (Professional Engineer II) to join our team. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on some of the greatest challenges facing Nebraska's bridges. As a member of NDOT's Bridge Division, you will serve an important role within our team. Oversight of bridge data and inventory evaluation is critical to supporting the Transportation Asset Management Plan, conducting funding needs assessments, and providing data-driven analysis to assist other sections within the Bridge Division in making informed decisions. The Bridge Data and Inventory team plays a central role in our collective ability to understand challenges facing our bridges, delivery of effective bridge design, and ensure our bridge management practices are effective.

As a member of the Bridge Data and Inventory team at NDOT, you'll play an important role in managing and preserving Nebraska's bridge infrastructure. You'll collect, maintain, and communicate bridge data to effectively achieve our mission of making highways safe and efficient.

Key responsibilities of the role include:
• Supporting NDOT’s Transportation Asset Management Plan (TAMP) related to bridge assets.
• Evaluating various sources of data and providing analyses to support decision-making.
• Understanding and applying bridge engineering principles to asset management and process improvement practices.

Job Duties:

As a Bridge Professional Engineer II at the Nebraska Department of Transportation Bridge Division, you will be a critical part of a team that serves the State in providing strong asset management practice and ensuring we’re maintaining compliance with Federal regulations. This team is responsible for various asset management, analysis, and communication tasks that serve the Bridge Division in important ways.  

These tasks will be varied in nature but center around supporting the bridge division with maintaining our bridge data in a high-quality status and providing critical analysis on the performance of Nebraska bridges generally and as it relates to specific details, all towards delivering various asset management goals for our bridges. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting NDOT’s Transportation Asset Management Plan related to bridge assets.
  • Evaluating various data sources and providing analytical insights to support funding needs assessments, project prioritization, and other strategic decisions.
  • Supporting the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) database with data from bridge inspections, construction projects, and repairs.
  • Supporting data quality reviews to ensure accuracy, compliance with federal regulations, and adherence to NDOT standards.
  • Preparing reports and analyses to support bridge load ratings, design standards, preservation strategies, and funding requests.
  • Providing technical guidance to NDOT staff and local agencies regarding bridge inventory, data management, and inspection records.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent and effective bridge data communication and utilization.
  • Supervising junior staff.
  • Leading and supporting various process improvement initiatives throughout the Bridge division by analyzing current practices, identifying efficiencies, and recommending enhancements.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


 

Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and one year of experience performing professional level engineering assignments. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in civil engineering or data science.
  • Four years' minimum experience in bridge design or infrastructure asset management.

Other:

  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to provide authorized independent transportation.
  • Must be available for occasional overnight travel.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in bridge engineering and asset management to ensure high-quality data, drive data-informed decisions, and support process improvements throughout the Bridge Division. They will exhibit strong analytical abilities to evaluate bridge data and provide critical insights, along with excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal teams, local agencies, and stakeholders. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.   • Proficiency in bridge engineering principles and asset management best practices.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess large datasets and provide actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration and technical guidance.
  • Experience with bridge inspection data, National Bridge Inspection Standards, and AASHTOWare BrM (preferred but not required; training provided as needed).
  • Ability to manage and ensure data accuracy within bridge inventory systems.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools and programming languages such as SQL and VBA is advantageous.
  • Aptitude for quickly learning new technologies and software applications.
  • Commitment to staying current with industry trends and continuously improving asset management strategies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
