This role will play a key part in the CMH/Helmsley QI Project aimed at advancing data management and integration for diabetes care through the effective use of health device data, including Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs). The Data Engineer will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of clinical and device data into the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system, develop tools for data visualization, and drive the creation of metrics-based dashboards for clinical intervention.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Data Integration and Development:

  • Develop systems to collect, process, and display CGM and BGM (blood glucose meter) data as structured numerical and graphical elements within the Epic EHR system.

  • Create and maintain note templates and EHR-native flowsheets for clinical use.

  • Design and implement structured data capture mechanisms for insulin dosing and device use in Primary Care and Endocrinology clinics.

Data Visualization and Dashboard Development:

  • Collaborate with clinical staff to create dashboard metrics incorporating A1c, CGM, and BGM data for regular review and patient-level interventions.

  • Design and maintain EHR-integrated tools for graphical data display and interactive visualization.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Work with interdisciplinary teams, including clinical staff, CDCES (Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists), PharmD providers, and population health managers, to define requirements and ensure alignment with clinical workflows.

  • Partner with IT and informatics teams to integrate solutions into existing infrastructure while adhering to institutional policies.

Technology and Data Infrastructure:

  • Leverage and expand the use of containerized environments (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) for scalable deployment.

  • Ensure robust data pipelines and storage solutions using technologies such as Databricks, SQL/PostgreSQL databases, and cloud-based computer services.

  • Implement authentication and data security protocols (e.g., oAuth) for secure data access.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay current with emerging technologies in healthcare IT, data engineering, and cloud computing to incorporate best practices into workflows.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to grant reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.

Work Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in Healthcare IT, Data Engineering, or Cloud Technology.

  • Proven experience with health device data management, particularly CGMs, is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

Work Experience:

  • Experience working with clinical teams and stakeholders to translate technical solutions into clinical practice.

  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements in healthcare, such as HIPAA.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work in interdisciplinary environments.

Skills:

  • Software Development: Proficiency in .Net, Python, SQL, PostgreSQL databases, and JavaScript.

  • Data Engineering: Hands-on experience with Databricks or similar tools.

  • Cloud Technologies: Proficiency in container management with Kubernetes or similar, cloud network infrastructure, and app services management.

  • Familiarity with Epic EHR integration and healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) is a strong plus.
