Job Title:AI R&D Student Employee

Location:Charlotte, NC, Knoxville, TN, Palo Alto, CA, Remote/Home Based

Job Summary and Description:

We are seeking an intern with a strong background in generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in fine-tuning gen AI models, retrieval augmented generation, and deploying models. This role requires an understanding of at least one major LLM model family (e.g., Llama, Gemini, Claude) and a desire to expand to other model families.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support technical staff in developing AI tools for solving use cases in the power industry.

  • Supervised fine-tuning large language models to enhance performance.

  • Implement retrieval augmented generation (RAG) techniques to enhance model performance with or without fine tuning.

  • Deploy models in production environments, with a focus on scalability and reliability with minimal hallucinations.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI solutions into various applications.

  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI, including deep learning and transformers.

  • Support the responsibilities of EPRI’s AI Center of Excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.

  • Experience with large language models, including fine-tuning, retrieval augmented generation, benchmarking, and deployment.

  • Proficiency with at least one major LLM model family (e.g., Llama, BLOOM, Gemini, Claude), preferably open-source models.

  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, or similar.

  • Experience with one or more cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) for deploying AI models.

  • Experience with on-premises platforms using HPC/GPU Clusters.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with natural language processing (NLP) and understanding of transformer architectures.

  • Knowledge of data engineering and data preprocessing techniques.

  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., GitHub) and collaborative development workflows.

  • Experience in developing and maintaining AI pipelines and workflows.

  • Experience with Nvidia Enterprise Suite (e.g., Enterprise, Omniverse, Earth2)

  • Publications or contributions to AI research communities and conferences

The hourly rate range for Student positions are:

  • Undergraduate: $16-29 per hour
  • Masters: $25-31 per hour
  • Ph.D: $27-34 per hour

These ranges are an estimate, and the actual hourly rate may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The hourly rate may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.

As an EPRI Student, you will not participate in EPRI’s Benefit Programs which includes health insurance, retirement benefits, vacation, sick leave (except as set required by law) and holiday pay. However, as a Student employee you are eligible for the benefits of Social Security, State Disability Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance.

For Student positions which require one to relocate to an EPRI office.  Relocation assistance is not provided and the student will be responsible for covering all relocation costs/expenses.

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
