EPE is seeking a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer with a focus on developing internal automation solutions to lead the design, development, and implementation of automation solutions serving EPE’s consultants in the electric utility (T&D) and power industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for architecting and maintaining robust automation frameworks, improving internal processes through smart and reliable software solutions with an eye on productizing these solutions aiming at enhancing system efficiency through innovative automation techniques. This includes the integration of disparate software systems to create a seamless workflow, reducing the time and effort required for data transfer and manipulation. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for the creation of sophisticated results processing pipelines, enabling the rapid and reliable generation of insights from complex datasets. The development of advanced visualization tools will further aid in the interpretation and presentation of results, allowing engineers and stakeholders to make informed decisions based on clear, comprehensive graphical representations of data. 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Automation Strategy & Implementation: 
    • Design and develop automation frameworks for software deployment, testing, and monitoring. 
    • Implement CI/CD pipelines to streamline software delivery and reduce manual intervention. 
    • Develop and maintain automated testing solutions to improve software quality and reliability. 
  • Software Development & Architecture: 
    • Lead the development of scalable software solutions incorporating automation to enhance efficiency. 
    • Architect and implement cloud-native automation strategies, ensuring seamless integration with existing software platforms. 
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure automation aligns with business needs and enhances user experience. 
  • Performance Optimization & Reliability Engineering: 
    • Develop scalable solutions that can dynamically adjust to increasing loads and effectively manage multiple requests to optimize compute resources. 
    • Ensure software systems are resilient, scalable, and maintainable by integrating automated failover and disaster recovery mechanisms, especially for analytics with  large data sets   
    • Analyze system performance metrics and propose optimizations to improve efficiency and reduce downtime. 
  • Security & Compliance: 
    • Implement automated security testing tools and frameworks to detect vulnerabilities early in the development lifecycle. 
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices through automated enforcement mechanisms. 
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: 
    • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and other team members. 
    • Stay updated on the latest trends in software automation, DevOps, and cloud computing, and integrate new technologies where applicable. 
    • Lead code reviews and enforce best practices for automated software development and deployment. 

     

     

     

    Qualifications

    Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

     

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. 
    • 10+ years of experience in software development, including 7+ years of experience in automation, DevOps, and cloud-native architectures. 
    • Proven expertise in designing and implementing automation solutions for large-scale software systems. 
    • Extensive experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, etc. 
    • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or Ansible. 
    • Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or JavaScript with experience in developing automation scripts and frameworks. 
    • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes. 
    • In-depth knowledge of cloud services, particularly AWS, and experience in building serverless automation solutions. 
    • Strong expertise in test automation frameworks like Selenium, Cypress, or JUnit for UI and API testing. 
    • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as New Relic, Grafana, or ELK Stack for automated system monitoring. 

     

    Preferred Education and Experience: 

    • Experience with machine learning automation for predictive analytics and optimization. 
    • Familiarity with ArcGIS and geospatial data automation is a plus. 
    • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and automated security testing methodologies. 
    • Experience developing software for the power and energy industry is highly desirable.

    Location: Austin, TX - Remote

    Travel:  Occasional travel may be needed (10% or less)
