The Opportunity

We are looking for a highly motivated Lab Automation Service Engineer to join our team to help maintain and expand our laboratory automation service infrastructure. You will play a critical part in ensuring the smooth operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of automated laboratory systems. You will work closely with scientists, automation development engineers, and operations teams to optimize workflows, enhance system performance, and resolve technical issues. You will contribute to shaping the technology development and automation service infrastructure roadmap for current and future system development. This is a full-time onsite position and is located at our headquarters in South San Francisco, California reporting direction to the Lab Support Engineer Lead.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance for laboratory automation systems, including liquid handlers, robotic workstations, and integrated lab instruments.
  • Perform hardware and software troubleshooting, including diagnosing system errors, resolving failures, and coordinating repairs with vendors.
  • Perform validation services (IQ/OQ) on standalone instruments and integrated systems.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), user guides, and troubleshooting manuals.
  • Manage and maintain our CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to ensure issues and equipment maintenance are accurately recorded and up-to-date.
  • Train and assist end users in best practices for using automation systems effectively.

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, life sciences, or a related field (or equivalent experience), with 4+ years of experience in lab service.
  • Experience working with laboratory automation systems such as Hamilton, Agilent Bravo, or similar platforms.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in both hardware and software, with experience in debugging automation workflows.
  • Experience with liquid handling robotics, automated sample preparation, and high-throughput screening workflows.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills to effectively support lab users and maintain technical records.

Compensation & Benefits at insitro

Our target starting salary for successful US-based applicants for this role is $125,000 - $138,000. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate's skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data.

This role is eligible for participation in our Annual Performance Bonus Plan (based on company targets by role level and annual company performance) and our Equity Incentive Plan, subject to the terms of those plans and associated policies.
