The successful candidate will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Data Operational Specialist to join our dynamic Quality Management System team.


The Quality Management System (QMS) team is responsible for leading the advancement and maturation of our quality management system. It empowers the organization by delivering effective, efficient, and timely services, along with subject-matter expertise in quality and regulatory matters.

As part of the Quality Management System Solutions team, the Data Operational Specialist is responsible for supporting the optimal performance, support, and continuous enhancement of the organization’s quality management system solutions and integrations. This role involves managing and maintaining data from key quality management software, including ETQ Reliance and the SuccessFactors Learning Management System, to ensure seamless operation and alignment with business needs. The specialist will also focus on process improvements and data integrity, working closely with cross-functional teams to optimize data workflows and support system evolution.

Formula for success

  • Utilizing your skills in supporting quality and regulatory data needs, you will collaborate with senior management in quality and regulatory affairs to understand and fulfill data requirements.
  • Applying your expertise in defining data requirements for system changes, you will ensure data and reporting needs are proactively addressed when defining requirements for new systems or system updates.
  • Harnessing your ability to optimize data processes with stakeholders, you will work with quality management system process owners and other staff to design and implement processes that enhance data gathering and delivery.
  • Leveraging your skills in organizing and analyzing complex data sets, you will collect, map, and organize large datasets from various quality management systems to support data management and reporting needs.
  • Collaborating with the IT group, you will build data infrastructure to develop the infrastructure for efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) from various sources, utilizing AWS and SQL technologies.
  • Maintaining your proficiency in data systems, you will keep up-to-date expertise in quality management system databases, data warehouses, and analytical tools.
  • Leveraging your understanding of information systems and regulatory standards, you will understand and comply with Canadian Blood Services’ standards for information systems and regulatory requirements.


Desired education and skills

  • Completion of post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline (e.g., computer science, information technology, data science, or business analytics) from a recognized academic institution.
  • Strong interview skills to be able to correctly understand user requirements.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis on external and internal processes and data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Expertise in designing logical and physical data models, including star and snowflake schemas for data warehousing schemas for data warehousing
  • Power Bi and data visualization skills for building dashboards, writing DAX expressions and creating user-friendly, insightful visualizations.
  • Experience with database performance tuning and optimization to enhance database and query performance.

What you can expect 

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week. 
  • You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day.  
  • You may be expected to travel to alternate Canadian Blood Services offices or site locations, including head office in Ottawa at 1800 Alta Vista Drive, for biannual in-person team meetings or as required.
