The Office of Information and Technology Services (ITS) works to build the capacity of schools to use information and technology, digital transformation, maintain network infrastructure, security standards, and support other departments to meet district goals. Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Data Solutions, the Data Engineer is responsible for building and maintaining the District’s data infrastructure and data integration. This includes ensuring high-quality data is integrated between internal applications and our external partners. Additionally, the Data Engineer will be responsible for building and expanding an environment that supports data-informed decision making.  This is a full-time, exempt position that will be paid for time worked on a salary basis.

 

This position will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

·       Update and maintain the job schedule in Appworx scheduler.

·       Oversee the code repository, technical documentation store and deployment process.

·       Maintain the CPS Enterprise Data Warehouse and ODS builds. Model extensions to the existing Data Warehouse.

·       Design, develop, and deploy data pipelines. Implement data quality checks and validation rules to ensure data accuracy and consistency.

·       Ingest data from various sources (databases, files APIs) and transform it into usable formats for analysis and reporting.

·       Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into technical solutions. Support system and user acceptance testing activities, including issue resolution.

·       Create Dashboard pages and metrics within Microsoft Power BI and the CPS custom dashboard solution.

·       Ensure data integrity and data quality within the reporting presentation layer.

·       Contribute to the development and maintenance of data governance policies and procedures.

·       Other duties as assigned.

 

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, this position must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:

·       Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience Required:

·       Minimum of three (3) years of Data Warehouse experience is required.

·       Experience with the following is preferred:

·       Basic exposure to any programming language (C, C++, VB, Python, R etc.).

·       Job scheduling (Appworx, Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory).

·       DevOps engineering experience with Azure DevOps.

·       ETL tools such as (Azure Data Factory, SSIS, Ab Initio) in a development role.

·       SQL Objects, stored procedures, views, functions.

·       SSRS, Power BI or other reporting tools.

·       SQL Server versions.

·       Unix and Shell Scripting.

·       Microsoft Azure cloud technologies, including Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Data Lake, and Azure SQL Database.

·       MDM Tools, such as Profisee or Informatica MDM.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·       Strong ANSI SQL knowledge expertise

·       Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present to a group.

·       Understanding of database objects (entities, attributes, constraints, relationships, joins etc.)

·       Ability to write SQL DDL and DML queries.

·       Knowledge of data modeling/Star Schema.

·       Ability and initiative to learn and research new concepts, ideas, and technologies quickly.

·       Strong systems/process orientation with demonstrated analytical thinking, organizational skills and problem-solving skills.

·       Ability to develop and organize high-quality documentation.

·       Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

·       Ability to quickly pick up new tools and technologies.

·       Willingness and ability to train and teach others.

·       Ability to facilitate meetings and follow up with resulting action items.

·       Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

·       Ability to effectively move forward on tasks even with ambiguous or changing requirements.

 

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

·       Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
