The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Director of Affiliate & Advocacy Analytics in the Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY, Washington, DC, or San Francisco, CA. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The ACLU Technology Department is a broad umbrella covering both the ACLU’s Analytics and its Product & Engineering teams, two robust and innovative divisions that power the work of the ACLU. The department provides trusted, dependable, and impactful analytics, engineering, as well as product design and management expertise for the ACLU. In partnership with experts across the ACLU, the technology team delivers best-in-class solutions, services, and innovation that advance the ACLU mission and organizational priorities.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Reporting to the Head of Analytics, the Director of Affiliate & Advocacy Analytics leads the Analytics team’s work with and support of the ACLU’s network of 54 affiliates nationwide. This includes triaging, prioritizing, and executing high-impact data and analytics work for affiliate litigation and advocacy efforts; supporting, mentoring, and supervising data analysts and scientists, as well as data-related contractors and academic partners embedded with affiliates; and strategically building capacity for data work in affiliates. The scope of the analytics work may include partnering with ACLU attorneys and advocates across a wide range of civil liberties issues to shape research questions, conduct analyses (ranging from descriptive analytics to causal inference modeling to computational analyses), and evaluate program effectiveness. This role also supports our National Political Advocacy (NPAD) team to measure and inform their electoral and Organizing programs via experiments and post-election analysis.
YOUR DAY TO DAY
- Manage and mentor a team of data analysts both within National Analytics, as well as affiliate analytics staff
- Navigate, build, and maintain relationships with National staff & affiliate partners
- Support our National Political Advocacy (NPAD) program, with campaign experiments and post-election analysis
- Work on analytics products in partnership with the ACLU’s affiliates, including support for litigation, advocacy, and public education efforts
- Partner with the Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives (ASNI) team to provide coordinated technical resources and support to affiliates
- Identify and prioritize areas of strategic investment in the affiliate network, drawing on resources within the National Analytics and ASNI teams
- Provide mentorship and professional development for analysts working at affiliates
- Maintain existing affiliate partnerships while seeking new opportunities to strengthen affiliate analytics expertise
- Partner with other Analytics Directors on projects and initiatives, and partner with Product & Engineering colleagues on projects and initiatives
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Political Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science) or equivalent experience that provides a high degree of proficiency in social science methods and capabilities applicable to our work
- Significant experience/mastery in applying data and advanced analytics tools in research, advocacy, or non-profit setting
- Experience in management or leadership experience on a technical team
- Fluency in Python or R, or similar analytics and programming languages
- SQL proficiency
- Familiarity with a wide range of statistical methods, social science methods, machine learning techniques, and computational techniques
- Familiarity with VAN (voter activation network) or other voter management systems
- Strong technical communication
- Comfort with ambiguity
- Resourceful and skilled approach to stakeholder management skills
- Experience leading complex, cross-team projects from conception to completion
COMPENSATION
The ACLU is committed to equity, transparency, and clarity in pay. Consistent with our compensation philosophy, there is a set salary for each role based on geographic work location. The annual salary for this position is $212,836 (Level C2), reflecting the salary of a position based in New York, NY.
