Data Analyst I (Intern)

Performs entry-level data analysis and data research work. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Develop your skills with a dynamic team of information technology professionals at TDI. With more than $250 billion in premiums in 2023, Texas is the nation’s second largest insurance market and the fifth largest in the world. The Information Technology division is hiring a data analyst intern to work with IT professionals and program area staff to support and develop the agency’s data management program. You will learn valuable information technology skills and all about data management at a state agency. You will be at the forefront of supporting insurance regulation that impacts the daily lives of Texans.

This part-time, paid position provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the various types of information technology careers within TDI, including project management, system administration, and software development. Through this position, you will build your professional and communications skills and receive hands-on experience in data management practices. This temporary, part-time position is in Austin and requires 20 hours a week, with two days per week of in-office attendance at the Barbara Jordan Building required. This temporary position will begin around March 1, 2025, and end on or before August 31, 2025.

The Information Security Office provides training and a positive, collaborative work culture. An ideal candidate will have data analysis and writing skills, the ability to interpret state and federal laws and technical standards and apply them to novel problems. The candidate will be detail-oriented and an excellent communicator, with good collaboration skills and judgment. The ideal candidate will show a willingness and ability to take on new challenges and subject matter.

This position:

·         Collects, queries, and analyzes data using standard statistical tools, applications, methods, and techniques.

·         Interprets data analysis results to identify significant differences and trends in data to inform decisions.

·         Consults with internal and external customers to identify data analytics needs.

·         Cleans and prunes data to discard irrelevant information.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

This position requires: 

·       Current enrollment in an accredited college or university, pursuing a degree in mathematics, statistics, information science, information systems, analytics/data science, computer science, business administration, or related degree.

·       Transcripts verifying completion of at least 90 college hours are required.

·       6 months of experience with data structures or algorithms gathered from, completing a data structures, or algorithms class, coursework, course projects, research, individual projects, internships, or other practical experience.

This position requires regular work attendance. The position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule. If eligible, the employee must have a secure, dedicated workspace with reliable broadband internet service. The ideal candidate must be available for weekly meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams and other applications during regular business hours.
