KBR’s Science and Space division is seeking a Remote Sensing Scientist to support our Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation & Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/) near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org).
This position is aligned with the TSSC Science Division supporting projects led by the USGS Integrated Science and Applications Branch. The work includes coordination with a team of exceptionally skilled remote sensing scientists, data scientists, geospatial specialists, and systems/software engineers who work together to support dynamic science and technical requirements in collaboration with our USGS customer.
The successful candidate will work locally within a portfolio of projects that focus on remote sensing time-series algorithm development to support higher level geospatial product formulation and implementation. A strong background in remote sensing science and Landsat product expertise paired with proficient programming, statistical analysis, interpretive, and communication skills will drive decision-making for algorithmic approaches to potential new products.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate science activities and support systems engineering, software engineering, data management, and operational development teams
- Perform investigative literature and code reviews to assess algorithm approaches and performance
- Independently analyze and resolve unknowns and complex issues associated with emerging remote sensing-based datasets
- Develop science-level code to determine the viability of higher-level product algorithms
- Devise and implement visualization capabilities to aid the assessment of algorithm/model outputs and presentation of results
- Execute intense statistical analysis and interpretation to drive decision making
- Collaborate with USGS stakeholders to create and maintain positive customer relations
- May include travel to attend scientific conferences or other project-related meetings
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must meet the requirements listed below to be considered for this position; please note required items on your resume.
- Must have a 3-year residency in the United States.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain credentials for facility access and user accounts.
- Education: PhD degree in Geoscience or related field with emphasis in remote sensing
- Years of Experience: 5+ years of directly related professional experience
- Fundamental understanding of remote sensing concepts, derivatives, and applications
- Recent competency with image processing and GIS software, such ERDAS, ArcPro, IDL, MATLAB, FORTRAN
- Specific experience with remote sensing processing methods supporting Landsat science products
- Demonstrated proficiency within the Python ecosystem, such as NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, GDAL, Rasterio, PyTorch
- Practical experience working in a collaborative software development environment and associated configuration management tools, such as Gitlab
- Versatile ability to perform work in variety of development environments, such as high performance compute, Cloud, virtual desktop infrastructure
- Superior technical writing skills to support new product characterization, manuscript publication, conference presentation, user community documentation, and project communications
- Productive interpersonal skills that facilitate work and communication with variable levels of technical expertise
WORK LOCATION
This position is anchored in Sioux Falls, SD and performs in a hybrid work environment to support local staff. Travel may be required for conference participation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Three years of continuous residency in the U.S. for issuance of a Government Security credential
- The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for government facility access and user account
Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements.
