What is subsea engineering?
Subsea engineering is a specialized field that deals with the design, installation, and management of underwater systems. These systems include oil rigs, wells, and pipelines, and are crucial for extracting valuable resources from beneath the ocean floor.
Subsea engineers are responsible for developing and installing various underwater systems, ranging from oil and gas extraction equipment to pipelines and communication networks. Their duties typically involve designing and developing complex underwater systems, installing and maintaining these systems, managing subsea projects, solving problems, and staying current with industry trends and advancements.
At Wood, subsea engineering involves various activities such as system engineering, the design of pipelines, subsea structures, drilling, marine terminal, and integrity management. Young engineers in this field have the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers globally and work on projects that span the entire lifecycle, from early phases to decommissioning.
There are a variety of tasks and responsibilities you might be assigned however some common tasks that many of our graduate engineers perform include:
- Assisting senior engineers with projects: opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced engineers in the industry. This exposure isn't limited to just our local team but extends globally, providing a well-rounded learning experience.
- Daily activities include: shadowing projects that span the entire lifecycle—from the early phases all the way through to decommissioning. This includes working on various aspects such as pipeline, subsea structures, drilling, marine terminal, and integrity management.
- Some of the specific scopes they will be involved in: system engineering and the design of pipelines. This encompasses routing, mechanical design, lateral buckling, walking, and on-bottom stability. They will also work on the design of subsea spools and tie-ins, conducting analyses, calculations, and assessments to support pipeline design. Ensuring design optimisation and the application of appropriate codes and standards will also be key responsibilities.
- Learning Wood processes and procedures: It's important to understand how Wood operates and the specific procedures and protocols you'll be expected to follow.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams: Collaboration will be essential as they contribute and work effectively with the project team, project management, and the client where appropriate. They will provide support to the multi-discipline engineering team throughout various phases of the project lifecycle.
- Debugging and troubleshooting: If a product or system isn't working as intended, you may be called upon to help identify and resolve the problem.
- Preparing reports and presentations: Develop relevant design reports and drawings, and participate in the technical review of design documentation. Providing technical assistance, coordination, and liaising with other disciplines on all technical and general requirements will also be part of their role..
- Continuously improving your skills and knowledge: The engineering field is constantly evolving, so it's important to stay up to date with new developments and best practices.
What we can offer
- Global graduate program including face-to-face development workshops, online learning, lunch and learns, networking & social events
- Meaningful and interesting projects delivered to leaders of industry across renewables and emerging energy sectors

What we look for in these roles:
- Completed your Bachelor of Mechanical, Civil or Oil & Gas Engineering degree by the end of 2025 or earlier.
- Strong IT, software and data interrogation skills
- Coding experience: (Python, VBA, others) and Machine Learning skills are advantageous.
- Attention to detail: You will be responsible for creating detailed designs and specifications and must pay close attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and safety of the work.
- Teamwork: Most engineering projects require collaboration and teamwork, so strong interpersonal and collaboration skills are essential
- Adaptability: Engineering is a constantly evolving field, and as a graduate engineer you should be able to adapt to new technologies and techniques.
- Problem solving: Engineering often requires finding creative solutions to complex problems. Good critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills are highly valued.
- Communication skills: The ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner is important for a graduate engineer. This includes the ability to write reports, give presentations, and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.
- Continuous Learning: Technologies and methodologies are constantly changing so staying up to date is an important attribute
- Creativity: have that innate ability to “think outside the box”
- Analytical ability: ability to think analytically to fully define a problem and develop solutions suited to the problem.
- Logical thinking: ability to understand how a system works, what can go wrong and how to fix it. This requires the ability to think logically and evaluate and understand each element that makes up the system
- Leadership: well-developed “human skills” so you can smoothly perform non-technical duties.
- Respect for health and safety protocols: this is more of a requirement than a skill but adherence to policies that aim to eliminate or mitigate risk is a necessity.
