The NLA works on behalf of UK publishers to license organisations to make paper & digital copies of newspaper, magazine & news website content.NLA media access limited represents the intellectual property rights of prominent publishing brands in the UK – more than 14,000 newspaper and magazine print and web titles, from over 300 publishers. The company also operates a database providing content and services to media monitoring agencies and publishers, containing ~250 million articles from print and web publications.
We are looking for an Analytics Engineer for our technology department. You'll be responsible for developing and improving our business intelligence landscape, promoting the use of Looker for dashboards and Retool for app building.
To be successful in this role you will be an enthusiastic self-starter who will be able to work in both the business and technical domains. As a key member of a small team, you will need to have the skills and experience to confidently produce engaging and informative work. Technically, the role stretches from the building of dbt models to the creation of clear and engaging visualisations, and covers everything in between.
The role reports into the Head of Business Intelligence and Process Automation which is part of the technology & digital team. The majority of the technology team work remotely, and our sales and finance teams are 'hybrid' with a mix of working from home and from our bright and spacious headquarters in Royal Tunbridge Wells. This role will be remote (UK-based), with an expectation of one or two days per quarter in the office. The office is less than a 5 minute walk from the train station, with trains directly into London and elsewhere.
Responsibilities
- Alongside a small team of analysts and engineers, your primary focus will be business intelligence and data visualisation in Looker.
- Drawing on both your own and your wider teams’ knowledge of user needs, digital technologies and delivery approaches, you will be able to build solutions which meet user expectations, budgets and timeframes, utilising your experience to identify and mitigate common pitfalls in digital delivery.
Dashboard Development and Enhancement
- proactively look for opportunities to improve our current dashboards and applications.
- create new dashboards and custom visualisations, evangelising the use of Looker throughout the business.
- work in tandem with other members of the technology team to serve as the subject matter expert on Looker, and to a lesser extent, Retool
- identify technical challenges and provide solutions for improvement, focusing on customer satisfaction and efficiency, whilst promoting good practice.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
- work with the Business Analyst and wider business to UAT any dashboards or applications produced.
- work closely with technical team resources to resolve complex technical issues related to ongoing projects.
- communicate results and statuses to users and programme or delivery managers.
- develop and deliver system training as needed.
Requirements
Technical Skills
- Extensive Looker development experience (whilst other BI platforms are good additional experience, the candidate MUST be able to evidence substantial Looker experience in a work environment) including the use of LookML
- Javascript to create custom visualisations in Looker
- Javascript specifically within a low code platform, such as Retool, would be beneficial but not essential.
- Extensive dbt experience, using unit testing to validate your SQL modelling logic.
- Hands-on experience with a modern data warehouse such as BigQuery
Agile Methodologies
- Using Jira, ability to organise and manage workload efficiently and prioritise projects with minimal supervision
- Ideally having worked in an Agile environment
Soft Skills
- Excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to rapidly grow your network in the organisation to identify and collaborate with our engineers, analysts and the wider business
- Ability to quickly understand technical concepts
- Understanding of new technologies, methodologies and approaches
You MUST be able to demonstrate prior related technical work experience
