Our Opportunity

Location: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

The Lead Data Engineer will drive data-driven decision-making by ensuring the seamless delivery of high-quality data across the organization. Leading a team of data engineers, you will define the data architecture strategy, establish engineering standards, and design scalable ETL/ELT frameworks.

You’ll shape the technical roadmap, champion data quality initiatives, and ensure efficient data flow within the Operations Data Lake and Data Warehouse ecosystems. As a technical leader, you will guide the team's development, establish best practices, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to align data strategy with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor the Data Engineering team, focusing on recruitment, professional development, and fostering a culture of excellence.
• Define and implement enterprise data architecture standards, including ETL/ELT processes, data warehouse design, and internal systems integration.
• Drive the technical vision for scalable and high-performance data processes, ensuring alignment with business value across reporting platforms.
• Establish data quality frameworks and governance standards, with robust monitoring and reconciliation processes.
• Collaborate with senior stakeholders to identify data opportunities, communicate insights, and shape the data roadmap.
• Manage stakeholder relationships, providing regular updates on initiatives, technical issues, and incident response.
• Develop and execute a skills program for Data Engineers, supporting technical training and career progression.
• Own vendor relationships and influence technology partnerships, aligning product roadmaps with organizational needs.

Qualifications and Experience

• 8+ years of experience in Data Engineering, with 3+ years in leadership or supervisory roles.
• Expertise in data architecture, data quality, metadata management, ETL/ELT, analytics, reporting, and database administration.
• Strong leadership skills with proven ability to develop standards and operating practices.
• Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution, and product strategy decision-making skills, coupled with proficiency in analysing data to draw business insights and making data-driven decisions.
• Effective communication skills for translating complex technical concepts to business stakeholders.
• Bonus: Experience in Project Management, Business Analysis, Operations, Statistical Analysis, and Quality Assurance.
• Strong SQL knowledge, familiarity with Python, Git, AWS, and data platform technologies (Snowflake, AWS, GitHub).
• Ability to synthesize complexity into simple, pragmatic solutions, with a high attention to detail.
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle, data management systems, and generating process documentation.
• Understanding of Release Management, Change Management, and familiarity with data platform technologies.
• Degree in Computer Science, Business, or related field (desirable).
