Data Engineering Intern

The Data Engineering Intern will play a supporting role in the fulfillment of data requirements, leading value-add analytics and insights that contribute to business efficiencies and growth. Supporting the Senior Data Engineering Developers, the opportunity will provide further technical development and programming skills, gaining experience working with large datasets, various on-prem and cloud technologies and contributing to Interac's mission of powering and enhancing the digital economy in Canada.

You’ll be responsible for:   

  • Collaborating with internal teams to deliver data from source to target, while monitoring for and addressing data quality issues

  • Supporting the development of data pipelines, including building, automating, and deploying internal tools to solve problems or improve processes

  • Monitoring, driving remediation, and providing root cause analysis for data flow issues

  • Developing data pipelines to help power insights for internal data and analytics consumers

  • Documenting and updating practices, processes, and standards where necessary

  • Support with team daily stand-up meetings

  • Managing deliverables and timelines, negotiating with internal stakeholders to meet relevant project milestones

You bring:   

  • You are currently enrolled in a university or college program in a relevant discipline, like Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science or similar field

  • At least two years of experience with programming and development skills (Python or similar language)

  • You must have experience with SQL (any dialect), Jira and Confluence

  • Solid verbal, written and analytical communication skills – you have experience writing technical documentation and can write complex concepts, ideas and thoughts clearly and succinctly

  • Proven time management and organization skills. You can prioritize and manage your time effectively to meet deadlines

  • A sense of curiosity – you enjoy learning, asking questions and are eager to help identify opportunities to support the optimization of internal processes

  • You are a proactive and analytical problem-solver with a demonstrated track record being able to identify issues as they arise and can triage accordingly

  • Comfortable with learning and working effectively either independently or with groups across different functions and levels.  

  • Although not required, you have some familiarity or previous experience with the following: 

    • Data warehousing concepts

    • Familiarity with Linux-based systems

    • Git Fundamentals

    • PySpark / Distributed Computing

    • Talend, AWS, Oracle

Workstyle: Hybrid (3 days on-site)

Location: Toronto

Term: May to August 2025

Duration: Monday – Friday
