Overview:
We are seeking a Group Leader, Data and Platforms Services who will focus on leading a talented team of software engineers, data engineers, and information scientists to provide a robust data ecosystem for National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) users. The NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure for technical and scientific professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. As an important part of the broader High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, the division also hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), a Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility.
This position resides in the Data and Platforms Services (DAPS) group in the HPC Operations section within the NCCS division part of the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The DAPS group provides users with the tools and guidance needed to successfully deploy integrated workflows connecting compute and data resources and services across the facility. The group focuses on leveraging the OLCF’s container-orchestration Kubernetes platform, Slate, to design, implement, and deploy services that enable data-intensive workflows and provide a robust ecosystem of data services. The group is also responsible for delivering data management capabilities, mechanisms to facilitate large-scale data analysis, and interactive computing services.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
In this role, you will lead and advocate for a diverse and talented group of software engineers, data engineers, and information scientists, guide their technical work, and expand their ranks with new hires when needed. You will develop a vision and implement a cohesive group strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing technical projects to position the group and the organization for future success.

- Review code and ensure the team builds software that is architecturally consistent, of high quality, and follows operational best practices.
- Design, implement, deploy, and support a wide range of data management services and integrated workflows within the NCCS ecosystem.
- Work with other teams across the division to meet the division's operational challenges
- Help bring clarity to the team by fostering clear communication, understanding, and process improvements

Basic Qualifications:
- MS degree and 7+ years of relevant experience or BS degree and 8+ years of relevant experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience in leading, hiring, building, and developing technical teams.
- A track record of designing, implementing, and deploying web services at scale.
- Experience with container orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes).
- Experience with software deployment pipelines, continuous integration, and continuous delivery practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- Experience writing software applications in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, and/or Drupal.
- Experience building and deploying containers in Linux-based environments.
- Experience using SQL database technologies (e.g., MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL).
- Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and/or support.
- Experience creating and supporting data pipelines.
- Familiarity with designing and managing data warehouses for storing large-scale data for analysis and reporting.
- Experience integrating multiple and distributed data sources using APIs or other web services for seamless data exchange and analysis.
- Familiarity with data stewardship best practices to ensure data is properly maintained and used in compliance with internal policies and external regulations (e.g., HIPAA, ITAR)
