The Advanced Analytics team at Sobeys is at the forefront of retail innovation. Our multi-disciplinary team of data scientists, engineers, developers, and analysts designs, develops, and deploys scalable ML/AI solutions that are fundamentally transforming how Sobeys and its family of banners interact with customers and operate their businesses.

What you’ll get to do in this role:
As Data Science Analyst in Advanced Analytics’ Marketing Team, you will have the opportunity to apply data science techniques and analytics to real-world business challenges in one of Canada’s largest retail organizations. As a Data Science Analyst, you will be a key contributor in advancing our machine learning and analytics capabilities. A crucial part of this role will be owning, managing, and continuously improving our Personalization code base, ensuring seamless coordination between teams to implement changes quickly and effectively.
Here’s where you’ll be focusing:
Responsibilities
- Help in the management of personalization codebase, ensuring it evolves to meet business needs by collaborating with Data Scientists, Engineers, and business stakeholders.
- Implement the enhancements and optimizations found in personalization ML models by Data Scientists that power customer recommendations and personalized experiences.
- Collaborate closely with Machine Learning Engineers (MLEs), Data Engineers (DEs), and fellow Data Scientists to build and manage end-to-end ML workflows within Databricks and Azure cloud environment.
- Write production-ready code and participate in peer code reviews to ensure best practices and maintainability.
- Help Data Scientists and MLEs to ensure robust and reliable model monitoring, evaluation, and reporting processes are in place to track model performance and continuously optimize outputs.
- Build various reports and dashboards using tools like Databricks dashboards to provide the analytics required for the Marketing management team.
- Collaborate with the Business Intelligence (BI) team to help in monitoring and measurement of personalization ML system performance through dashboards and analytics.

What you should bring to the team:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
- Proficiency in Python, with experience following coding best practices (Git, Pull Requests, CI/CD pipelines, etc.).
- Having good knowledge in coding large scale Python or SQL code (PySpark, HiveQL, etc.)
- Hands-on experience in managing and evolving ML-driven customer engagement systems, particularly in personalization or recommendation engines.
- Strong understanding of ML techniques, including collaborative filtering, matrix factorization, clustering, regression, deep learning, decision trees, and etc.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Databricks dashboards, Tableau or Looker.
- Ability to work independently in debugging and enhancing ML models to meet evolving business needs.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain and present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience or certification for working with large-scale datasets, ML model building and deployment in Databricks or Snowflake.
- Experience or certification developing ML models in Databricks and Spark environment (SparkML).
- Experience or certification with cloud environment like GCP, AWS, Azure, and cloud-based ML deployment (Azure ML, Vertex AI, Sagemaker).
- Experience in the Retail or similar industries like Consumer Goods is a plus, especially in the areas of marketing and customer analytics.
