The Opportunity

As a Data Governance Specialist I, you will support the initial phases of data governance efforts by contributing to the implementation of key data management initiatives. You will work under the guidance of more senior staff to ensure compliance with data governance standards and assist in operationalizing data governance policies.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in implementing data management best practices across specific business domains (e.g., data quality, data lineage, metadata management).
  • Collaborate with other teams to promote the adoption of data governance stewardship roles.
  • Help maintain data governance tools (data catalog, business glossary) and ensure they are up to date.
  • Conduct robust data profiling and quality checks using SQL and other scripting.
  • Collaborate with data stewards to define data quality rules.
  • Assist in gathering data governance requirements for specific projects.
  • Support collaboration with teams across data security, data modeling, data integration, data architecture, data quality, metadata, data warehousing, reference data, and business units. Assist data analysts, data stewards, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders in maintaining the integrity, security, and effective management of data across the organization.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with legal standards and mitigating risks to protect sensitive data through robust data governance practices. Collaborate with IT, data risk & compliance, data regulations, and fraud teams.
  • Stay informed about the latest technologies and data trends to support the enhancement of the organization’s data and analytics platform capabilities. Focus on tools like Informatica IDMC, AWS, Scripting, and SQL.
  • Assist cybersecurity architects in reviewing the IDMC Platform to ensure compliance with data security standards and organizational data policies.
  • Participate in the creation and enforcement of data privacy policies and programs, ensuring cybersecurity strategies are implemented across cloud data and analytics platforms.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of data governance frameworks across business units.
  • Conduct basic root cause analysis for data issues and collaborate with stakeholders to implement remediation strategies.
  • Support the adoption of data stewardship roles and responsibilities throughout the organization, assisting in data stewardship initiatives and ensuring stakeholder engagement.
  • Assist in the usage and optimization of data governance tools across the enterprise.
  • Monitor and support the improvement of data quality metrics to ensure data accuracy and completeness. Conduct basic analysis of data quality issues, assist in establishing remediation plans, and monitor data governance performance metrics for continuous improvement.

 

Role:

  • Responsible for: Supporting key data governance tasks including documentation, data profiling, and the initial stages of data management implementation.
  • Accountable for: Assisting senior governance personnel in ensuring compliance with data governance policies and quality metrics.
  • Consulted on: Data management within specific business domains (data lifecycle, metadata management).
  • Informed on: Broader data governance initiatives and policy changes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information system management, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data governance or data management roles, in legacy or cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of data governance tools (Informatica, Alation, Collibra) and frameworks.
  • 5+ years of experience in SQL scripting and data analysis
  • 3+ years of experience in ETL scripting in Informatica PowerCenter or IDMC.
  • Familiarity with platforms such as AWS (Athena, RDS, S3), Snowflake, Oracle Exadata, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, Hadoop, Cloudera, and RedShift.
  • Knowledge of SAS Enterprise Guide, Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, SAP Business Objects, and SSRS.
  • Ability to create dashboards and reports to aid in business decision-making.
  • Experience in supporting data quality assessments.
  • Familiarity with Data Regulatory and Compliance Frameworks, including the development of Policies, Standards, Guidelines, Controls, and Procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams in data governance initiatives.
  • Proficiency in establishing a common data language, including elements like Data Dictionary, Data Lineage, and Business Glossary.
  • Experience in identifying and classifying Enterprise Key Data Elements (Critical Data Elements).
  • Experience in supporting the maintenance of an Enterprise Business Glossary.
  • Background in supporting Enterprise Data Stewardship.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in improving data processes.
  • Competence in assisting with defining Business Requirements, Functional Designs, and Technical Specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of Data Models and Data Types.
  • Familiarity with GDPR, CCPA, SOX, FDIC, AML, CECL regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving and methodological skills.
  • Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, and Kanban methodologies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate data governance concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders, including both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools and database management systems.

Base Salary & Benefits
Our base salary for this position located in Illinois generally ranges between $132,000.00 and $152,000.00 annually, depending on business need and, on your qualifications, and experience. Base salary does not include incentive compensation, commission, or any other type of remuneration or benefits.
In addition to salary, Popular's well-rounded benefits package for regular full-time and part-time employees includes a comprehensive health plan, flexible time off options, and savings and investment plans. Seasonal/temporary employees are not eligible for these benefits.”
