The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Data Visualization Specialist position within STELAR/Academic Technology team in ITS.

 

The position is currently grant funded from the Army Research Lab for the School of Engineering through August 31, 2026 and continuation of the position is contingent on availability of funding.

Salary Range: $62,750 to $77,000

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

This exciting position offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge 3D visualization projects and collaborate with researchers from various fields. The Data Visualization Specialist assists faculty, staff and external clients with translating their data into large-scale visualizations on a Mechdyne Data Arc, a 30ft video wall with interactive and 3D capabilities. Using proprietary software, this position designs and translates research outcomes and other data into large scale visualizations for presentation to classes and other groups. This position develops additional capabilities of the wall and assists with other uses, including artistic displays and interactive environments. This position participates in the maintenance of the Arc and associated hardware and software in conjunction with the Mechdyne support contract.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with 3D visualization tools, specifically getReal3D/Unity to assist professors, staff and external clients to produce large-scale visualizations of data on a 30-foot Mechdyne video wall.
  • Develop interactive 3D visualizations using Unity, including real-time rendering, animation, and user interaction. This will involve working with other creative modeling and visualization tools including Blender and Adobe Creative Suite. Support creative uses of the wall, including large-scale graphic presentation, virtual galleries, and interactive experiences.
  • In conjunction with center director and student workers, help professors, staff and clients with group presentations of visualization experiences for classes and other gatherings. Manage lab bookings and communications with faculty, staff and external clients.
  • Operate visualization wall, explore and expand capabilities, assist with maintenance and upkeep of PC hardware/software used in visualization development and presentation.
  • Write documentation and Knowledge Base articles related to wall operations and capabilities.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Exposure to and interest in 3D design, data modeling and visualization required
    • Basic familiarity with Unity, Blender, Adobe, and data visualization tools
    • Scripting and coding ability, with demonstrated skill in at least one programming language

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
    • Experience with VR/AR development including knowledge of data analysis and visualization techniques
