Position: NAS-Staff Engineer
Position Synopsis: Successful candidate will have experience with feasibility studies, equipment reliability issues, system modifications and upgrades to improve safety and reliability. Individuals will demonstrate expert knowledge of computer languages, data structures, and software design methods and techniques. A successful candidate will demonstrate the use of independent judgment in performing calculations and/or designs and be able to present and justify analyses to regulatory, quality and safety reviews. Individuals will possess superior technical knowledge of nuclear and mechanical disciplines and software engineering. Successful candidates will have the ability to work on cross-discipline teams with other engineers to evaluate conditions and develop analyses to evaluate plant performance, safety, and reliability. Individual must have ability to interface and work with software vendors, as needed.
Must be familiar with codes and standards applicable to the nuclear, sustainability or process industries as well as possess working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations (including the PHMSA, NRC, DOE, etc.). Good client interface/communication skills and understanding of the roles of other disciplines, as well as ability to coordinate and interface with other disciplines, are a must.
Potential Technical Tasks: Throughout the time in this position, the following tasks may be performed:
- Independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Applies general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields, and ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
- Works on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects
- Maintains control over all current projects/ responsibilities.
- Follows up on all relevant issues.
- Independently develops and reviews more complex computer models (i.e., Thermal-Hydraulic, Chemical Process, Carbon Capture, Hydrogen/Ammonia production and/or Radiological) in additional application area.
- Continues to develop modeling expertise in other applications areas.
- Develops new techniques and/or improved processes.
- Data manipulation and task automation for analysis input
- Performing computations and analyses
And/Or
- Software development.
- Software verification and validation.
- Tests and reviews software.
- Documents code per company standards.
- Quickly learns new programming languages.
- Automates tasks where appropriate for efficiency.
Managerial Responsibilities: Coordinates and assigns tasks to Associate Engineers, Engineers and Senior Engineers, technicians and administrative personnel and may supervise personnel to complete assignments/projects. Prepares and reviews scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments. Prepares proposals for professional services.
Professional Activities: Member of industry organization preferred, leadership role or committee participation encouraged; technical presentations/publications support.
Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, mechanical, or chemical engineering or an appropriate science from an ABET/EAC accredited program.
Experience Required: Five (5) years of experience minimum, including credit for advanced engineering and science degrees, in the nuclear, chemical, petrochemical or sustainability (e.g., carbon capture, hydrogen, ammonia, energy storage) industries. Experience with performing calculations, feasibility studies, engineering evaluations, system modifications and/or upgrades of nuclear, chemical, petrochemical or sustainability plants is required. Experience with complex computer software, such as process simulation, thermal-hydraulic or CFD computer code analysis, is required.
Individuals who are additionally involved with software development must demonstrate knowledge of computer languages, data structures, and software design methods and techniques. They are required to have experience maintaining and extending codes developed under a software QA program and are required to have experience in code walkthroughs and reviewing and checking analyses prepared by other engineers.
Other Qualifications: All applicants must possess good oral and written communication skills as well as presentation skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Effective time management skills are required as position may involve working on several projects concurrently. Ability to pass security and drug screening and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access is required. Successful candidates will be required to understand and comply with company policies, procedures, and processes. Overtime work is required at times. Travel is required to client sites with occasional periods of field/office work. Ability to perform walk downs of equipment in an industrial plant environment, to include climbing ladders, accessing security-controlled areas, and entering confined spaces and controlled hazardous areas is required.

Preferred Education: MS degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (nuclear, mechanical, or chemical) from an ABET accredited university is desired.
Preferred Experience: Experience with radiological or core physics/neutronics computer code analysis is desired. Experience in reviewing and checking analyses prepared by other engineers is desired. Knowledge of and experience in project scheduling techniques is a plus. Knowledge of and experience in Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) is a plus. Knowledge of and experience in Machine Learning (ML) and Digital Twins is a plus.
Preferred Certification(s) or License(s) Required: Professional Engineer certification is desired.
