Job DescriptionThe National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) at the National Renewable Energy Lab has been a primary force in advancing wind energy technology research. The NWTC is seeking an intern to work with researchers on data analysis and engineering modeling for loads analysis at the wind turbine level. The candidate will help analyze large datasets of observations coming from the Rotor Aerodynamics, Aeroelastics, and Wake (RAAW) project, including rotor blade deformation measurements and meteorological data.
Job duties will include:
- Quantifying wind turbine blade bending and torsion
- Validating physics-based wind turbine and wind-farm engineering tools (e.g., OpenFAST) through comparisons to modeling results
- Evaluating measurement uncertainty, accuracy, and methodological limitations.
- Collaborating with other researchers and technicians at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory
- Contribute towards the publication of results in technical journals/conference proceedings and help present work at conferences, symposia, and sponsor review meetings

Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications- The successful candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated experience writing code in python
- Demonstrated knowledge of a broad understanding and wide application of engineering principles, theories and concepts as well as general knowledge of wind energy related disciplines and applications
- Demonstrated experience or knowledge of OpenFAST is required
- Candidates pursuing degrees in aerospace sciences and engineering, atmospheric science, applied mathematics, computer science, or mechanical engineering are encouraged to apply
- Experience in wind engineering applications, statistics, and signal processing is preferred

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $39,200 - $62,700NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
