We are seeking a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer with a strong background in design-led or applied artificial intelligence. The person in this role will work with Prof Tim Miller on an exciting initiative between the University of Queensland and the Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET), Patiala, India, to establish a joint Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI.
You will undertake high quality cross-disciplinary research, engage with industry partners, seek competitive research funding, supervise research higher degree students and collaborate with partners at UQ & Thapar Institute. You will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, coursework thesis supervision and further development of the School’s education programs, as well as performing administrative activities associated with the School. We value collaborative research efforts and expect you to actively participate in university research networks and with the Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI.
Key responsibilities will include:
Research: Establish a research program, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.
Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.
Teaching: Develop and deliver courses, engage in curriculum design, coordinate courses, assess students, provide academic counselling, and adhere to university teaching rules.
Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About Thapar Institute of Engineering & TechnologyThapar Institute is a private engineering university in Patiala, located in the beautiful Punjab region of India, offering degrees in engineering, computer science, liberal arts, and management. Thapar is investing heavily in AI and Data Science, including funding for a new Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI. As part of the investment, Thapar and UQ are funding collaborative projects, travel, etc., for research projects in this area.
This position is intended to help lead this new initiative and undertake research projects as part of the centre.
The person appointed will be expected to undertake occasional travel to Thapar, where the institute will host them on their Patiala campus.
About YouFor Appointment at Level B
Applicants should possess a PhD in data science, artificial intelligence, or equivalent experience. Additionally, you will demonstrate:
A growing profile in research in data science or artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by track record of publications in high quality journals and conferences, and other impactful outcomes.
Demonstrated experience in working on applied, cross-disciplinary projects applying data science or artificial intelligence to real-world problems.
Desirable: Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
For Appointment at Level C
Selection criteria as listed above, in addition to the following:
A growing international profile in data science or artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by track record of publications in high quality journals and conferences, and other impactful outcomes
Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
A solid record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
