Associate Professor Computer Science/ Data Science/ Director QEP

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative professional for a dual appointment role as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Data Science and as the institutional Director of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) related to AI/ML and technology. This unique academic position combines leadership in the application of AI/ML for higher education with academic responsibilities, including teaching, research, student advising, and academic service.

The faculty role includes teaching courses in computer science, data science, and biomedical data science, advising and mentoring students in the School of Applied Computational Sciences (SACS), and developing instructional methods that reflect best practices in pedagogy. Additionally, the role involves conducting research utilizing data science techniques and contributing to academic service through collaboration with SACS faculty and staff.

As the Director of QEP, the role focuses on establishing and leading the QEP initiative (SACSCOC Standard 7.2) related to AI/ML and technology for Meharry Medical College.

Daily Operations

• Assign a percentage to each essential function Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

• Ability to integrate technology effectively and appropriately into the teaching and learning process.

• Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational    institution representatives, and the public in a professional manner.

• Ability to plan, evaluate and revise curricula, course content and course materials and methods for courses within the SACS

• Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students

• Ability to lead and supervise students in academic research utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.

• Keep abreast of development in your field by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.

• Develop and deploy impactful and socially responsible scientific knowledge and practical technologies that empower society to improve the quality of life.

• Ability to work collaboratively across university departments.

• Participate and lead grant writing/submission; scholarly publications in referred journals.

• Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.

• Participate in campus and community events.

• Implement SACSCOC Standard 7.2 - Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) related to AI/ML and technology for Meharry Medical College.

• Take the leadership role in implementing all aspects of SACSCOC Standard 7.2: a) topic identification, b) broad-based institutional involvement and support, c) improving Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and/or Student Outcomes, d) management and allocation of resources, and e) Assessment Plan.

• Organize faculty, staff, and student development activities related to QEP.

• Organize QEP programs and events at institutional level.

• Work with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation (OIEA) and Institutional Research (IR) offices regarding assessment and effectiveness of QEP.

• Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, or equivalent.

• Experience with AI frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).

• Sound judgment and maturity, exemplified by consistent professionalism in working with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally.

Education and Experience:

• Earned Doctorate degree in computer science or data science with emphasis in artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.

• Demonstrated expertise in Assessment and Curriculum Innovation.

• Demonstrated experience with QEP processes.

• Proven track record of research, teaching, and leadership in academic or industry settings.

• Publication track record commensurate with career path history timeline.

• Ability to develop, lead, and obtain external funding in research within 4 years.
