WHAT YOU'LL DO
As Big Data Engineer III at Coastal, you will design, develop, and implement efficient and scalable big data solutions. You will be responsible for optimizing complex SQL queries, enhancing data architecture, and ensuring efficient data flow and storage. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, mentoring junior team members, and contributing to the continuous improvement of big data processes.
HOW YOU'LL DO IT
- Design, develop, and implement efficient and scalable big data solutions using Hadoop, Spark (including HDFS, MapReduce, Hive, and Spark), Java, Python, and SQL.
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
- Utilize Java and Python for data processing, and application development within the Hadoop/Spark ecosystem.
- Enhance and optimize data architecture for efficient data flow and storage, addressing the needs of big data environments.
- Design and implement solutions for audit & balance/error handling, query development, test writing for file processing, and utilizing Azure components like data functions and Synapse.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of large datasets from partners, cores, and external sources to derive actionable insights.
- Lead and mentor junior team members, providing guidance and support in technical and non-technical areas.
- Contribute to strategic planning and document system designs to support organizational goals.
- Drive the continuous improvement of big data processes and systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Collaborate closely with the IT team, functional areas, and stakeholders to align data initiatives with business objectives.
- Deliver high-quality code to solve important business problems and ensure adherence to company coding standards, revision control, configuration management, and documentation.
- Adhere to schedules and ensure work stays on track within the scope of the team’s objectives.
- Work directly with Product Management and stakeholders to translate requirements, develop specifications, and deliver high-quality solutions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in big data engineering, preferably within the fintech or banking industry.
- Strong expertise in ETL tools, scripting languages including Apache Spark, Java, and Python, and data modeling.
- Proficiency with Azure environment components, including data functions and Synapse.
- Proven ability to lead and mentor junior team members.
- Strong understanding of coding standards, revision control, configuration management, and documentation practices.
- Proven experience leading software development projects and delivering quality, maintainable solutions.
- Proven ability to manage Big Data distributed system (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
- Proven ability to manage a Big Data platform in a highly regulated industry.
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design.
- Strong project management experience.
