About the Role

At ANZ our purpose is to shape a world where people and communities thrive and to achieve this, we need a talented Data Engineer to join our Data Portfolio tribe. The Data Portfolio tribe sits within the Australia Retail division and our mission is to combine business & technology capabilities to enable analytics, reporting & data asset development by users across ANZ’s Australia Retail division. 

As a Data Engineer in the Data Portfolio, you are responsible for building world class data processing and software solutions in your squad and chapter to enable value from analytic models to drive rapid decision making. You’ll be a promoter and ambassador of the new culture and ways of working. You will bring domain knowledge or deep expertise on a specific topic. 

A key element of this is driving the data engineering agenda within the Data Portfolio, ensuring delivery of best practice end-to-end data whilst combining the discipline of software engineering that respects ANZ architecture standards. You will challenge inefficient engineering practise in ANZ and influence change in your field to drive better business outcomes. To this end, in the role you will implement smart and relevant data engineering to drive E2E application delivery and support the uplift of data engineering capability in Data Portfolio and linking into the wider Enterprise Analytics roadmap.

What will your day look like?

• Design data structures for data ingestion, integration and analytics layers on a variety of technologies 
• Design software that enables the automation of data engineering practices to increase productivity 
• Engineer efficient, reliable and scalable data pipelines 
• Working in a cross skilled squad with people both from business and technology to build intuitive data products 
• Contribute to design patterns for on-premise and cloud 
• Optimise data flows by building robust, fault-tolerant data pipeline that cleans, transforms, and aggregates unorganized and messy data into databases or data sources 
• Work on diverse data technologies such as Spark, Trino and Airflow 

What will you bring?

• MS or BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or equivalent practical experience in Data Engineering 
• A background in at least one of the following: distributed data processing, software engineering of data services, or data modelling that results in the building of high quality, scalable data products 
• Experience in ETL and developing data pipelines using big data technologies (Spark, Trino, Airflow) on large scale data sets and proficient with complex SQL 
• Experience and proficiency in at least one high-volume data processing environment (Cloudera, BigQuery, Trino/Presto or equivalent)  
• Software Engineering experience with proficiency in at least one major programming language Python (preferred), Java, Scala, PySpark, GO, Java 
• Conceptually familiar with cloud resources (S3, Kubernetes)     
• Extensive experience working within cross-functional, agile or continuous delivery teams 
• DevOps experience in a hybrid (on premises/cloud) environment using Docker containers
