Are you as passionate about the potential of generative AI as you are about the importance of fact-based journalism? Are you a technology-minded innovator and team-first collaborator eager to help drive a transformation that will unlock the full potential of the world’s leading multimedia news organization? If you said yes, read on: Reuters is hiring for a new role that will sit at the heart of our fast-growing AI development work. As our first ever Newsroom AI Editor, you will direct and support the hands-on work that will turn AI opportunities into robust editorial solutions.

This role is first and foremost about applying the same ethos of editorial excellence and consistency that Reuters practices on its news file to its expanding suite of generative AI skills. You will work on every part of the development chain, from iterative journalist-led experimentation on initial drafts to more formal evaluations of production-ready solutions. You will develop, maintain and apply best practices for prompt engineering to optimize results, and will evangelize these tenets for broad application by hundreds of journalists. In addition to technical proficiency and a detail-oriented editorial eye, this role requires selfless collaboration: Just like a news editor, your focus will be on elevating and refining the work of other journalists more than creating solutions yourself; just like a production editor, you will need to work closely with other teams beyond the newsroom, from product to engineering to data science. If this sounds like you, let’s talk.

About the Role

As our Newsroom AI Editor, you will:

  • Edit and refine generative AI skills and prompts for optimum results
  • Develop and implement consistent best practices for AI skill development and prompt engineering.
  • Stay updated on advancements in AI technology and incorporate relevant innovations into newsroom processes.
  • Oversee pre-production ethics and quality reviews and evaluations of new AI skills to ensure adherence to company standards and journalistic integrity.
  • Work closely with Product, Engineering and our data science teams and make the right connections into the newsroom for workflow analysis and AI testing.
  • Provide training and support to the newsroom on effective use of AI tools and prompt design.

About You

To be our Newsroom AI Editor, you are likely to have:

  • Proven experience in editing, journalism, or a related field, with a strong eye for detail and familiarity with workflows.
  • Experience with AI prompt engineering and understanding of large language models, particularly in content generation.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt to various tones and styles.
  • Analytical mindset and problem-solving skills, with the ability to optimize processes and outputs.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration, comfortable working in cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, computer science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with developing and applying evaluation metrics for different types of content
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python and familiarity with APIs

This role is advertised with a London, New York or Toronto base, but we will consider applications for hybrid work from other Reuters offices.

***Please note the job application deadline is Sunday, March 23rd.
