OverviewMicrosoft AI is seeking a highly skilled and passionate engineer to join our Copilot Personality & Personalization team, where you’ll help redefine the way humans interact with computers. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, dynamic environments and is eager to push the boundaries of AI research and engineering.   • Drive innovation in conversational AI, ensuring Copilot’s personality and model behavior are engaging, effective, and aligned with user needs. 
  • Conduct cutting-edge research around AI personality and model behavior, leveraging techniques such as synthetic data generation and reinforcement learning to fine-tune responses. 
  • Develop and optimize post-training methods, enhancing AI performance beyond initial training phases. 
  • Design and implement scalable AI models, contributing to model architecture, data curation, training & inference infrastructure, and evaluation protocols. 
  • Collaborate across teams to integrate new AI capabilities into real-world products, ensuring seamless deployment and user adoption. 
  • Overcome roadblocks and find solutions to rapidly iterate and deploy improvements, getting AI-powered experiences into the hands of users quickly. 
  • Work in a design-driven, product-focused environment, balancing technical excellence with usability and real-world impact.

 Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Python, C, C , C#, or TypeScript 
  • OR equivalent experience. 
  • Experience applying, evaluating, and/or training large language models (LLMs).  
 Preferred Qualifications: 
  • 3 years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team. 
  • 5 years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers). 
  • 2 years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker. 
  • 5 years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings). 
  • 3 years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping. 
  • Demonstrated experience in large-scale AI. 
  • Passionate about conversational AI and its deployment. 
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other engineers. 
  • Passion for learning new technologies and staying up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in AI. 
  • Proven ability to collaborate and contribute to a positive, inclusive work environment, fostering knowledge sharing and growth within the team.  

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
Software Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.  Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
