Michelin is hiring! We are looking for a top candidate with a passion for statistics and data analytics to be a part of our Research & Development team.
The opportunity
Michelin is recruiting a Statistician & Data Scientist to work on projects in various fields such as industrial processes and tire performance models as a member of our R&D community. You will join a team dedicated to digital methods developing advanced simulation tools for multiple applications, working with researchers and developers helping various manufacturing scopes. These tools and solutions are based on statistics, numerical modeling, high-performance computing, hybridization and data science. Your mission includes working with scientists and engineers, crafting statistical and data (AI) based approaches to support our research & industrial initiatives.
Situated in Greenville, South Carolina, the sprawling Michelin Americas Research Center (MARC) campus is home to approximately 650 talented employees, including materials researchers, product designers, scientists, engineers, test technicians and individuals in a variety of support roles.

What you will do
Development and application of statistical best practices and tools (Measurement Systems Analysis, Repeatability and Reproducibility of laboratory measurements, Design of Experiments for product development and testing teams)
Development of hybrid methods: Identify and develop approaches combining classical numerical modeling (finite elements, etc.) and machine learning (model reduction, predictive models) to optimize the performance of simulations and predictions.
Sophisticated Optimization: Investigate, adapt, and implement standard and advanced optimization methods, including global, multi-objective, and robust optimization, in uncertain contexts.
Creation and implementation of tools to resolve technical problems and provide technical support for existing statistical tools and methods.: (e.g. prototype and industrialize digital tools and data analysis methods using Python or similar).
Maintenance and continuous improvement: Ensure the support, maintenance, evolution and modernization of existing tools, integrating CI/CD practices (Git, Gitlab). Ensure documentation and testing. Transmit knowledge (reports, training, etc.)
Scientific monitoring: Monitor advances in the fields of artificial intelligence, numerical methods, optimization, hybridization and ML to maintain the technological excellence of the tools developed. Supporting partnerships with academic actors (internships, theses and research projects)
What you will bring
Technical knowledge:
- In-depth understanding and proficiency in statistical methods and applications.
- Knowledge of AI, Optimization, and Machine Learning techniques and a willingness to learn and apply more.
- Proficiency in Python languages or willingness to learn. C/C++ desirable.
- Knowledge of hybridization (finite elements coupled with data science models, for example).
- The ability to capture needs from partners and propose solutions.
Additional requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Physics, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics required along with a proven desire for working in an applied mathematics role.
- Previous experience as a data scientist in an industrial environment is a plus
