Milliman’s Health Research Team (HRT) seeks a Senior Health Data Analyst to work under the direct supervision of the Senior Manager, Health Data Analytics and to play a critical role in supporting and advancing business’ data environment initiatives and analytics projects. The successful candidate will:

  1. Assist consulting practices and the Health Research Board in completing advanced analytics associated with client, product, research, and data quality projects.
  2. Partner with other HRT data analytics and engineering professionals to build, improve, and maintain reporting tools and data pipelines.
  3. Collaborate with HRT finance, operations, and project management teammates through providing technical expertise.

The Health Research Team supports Milliman products and practices in a variety of capacities. These include but are not limited to financial functions, client support, project management, data engineering, and data analytics services. As a shared service team, we pride ourselves in delivering high quality, timely support to Milliman’s clients, consultants, and leadership teams.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, optimize, and maintain system processes
  • Report on common sources of technical issues or questions
  • Synthesize data into digestible information
  • Maintain, enhance, and ensure quality of current data sets, reports, and Excel workbooks using technical expertise
  • Become the HRT CMS Virtual Research Data Center (VRDC) data environment seat holder and collaborate with consultants on various analytic requests
  • Provide support for data environment questions, client projects, and research analytics, through our help desk and standard production workflows
  • Refresh and develop Business Intelligence reporting and dashboards utilizing large sets of claims and enrollment data
  • Create meaningful and trusting relationships with business stakeholders by capturing their requests and making informed recommendations
  • Communicate progress, status, issues, decisions on a regular cadence
  • Stay vigilant for ways to improve monitoring, discover issues and deliver better value to the business
  • Make informed recommendations to the business

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a preferred area of study in the following or a related field: Actuarial Science, Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, or similar fields
  • Five or more years' experience analyzing and managing large databases of health claim and enrollment data (e.g., administrative / closed claim data)
  • Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas and VBA automation
  • Intermediate or higher knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications, including Teams, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook, as well as Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong programming skills in SAS and SQL languages
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Visual acuity to prepare, read, interpret, and analyze detailed printed and electronic data

Competencies and Behaviors that Support Success in this Role 

  • Proficiency in multiple health care data analytics topics such as but not limited to pricing, provider contracting, Medicare Advantage bids, risk scores, clinical quality, health care economics, reserving, or financial reporting
  • Understanding of two or more health care lines of business
  • Exposure to working with data in Databricks, AWS, or Azure
  • Familiarity with Python coding language
  • Knowledge of the CMS’ VRDC data environment or LDS data files
  • Ability to develop data insights via best data visualization practices and via using PowerBI, or similar BI platform
  • Experience working in a consulting, customer service, or similar work environment
  • Comprehension of basic data engineering concepts

Location: This is a remote position.

Salary: The salary range is $­­­­­79,000 - $161,000 depending on a combination of factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, location, etc. This is a fulltime, non-exempt position eligible for overtime after 40 hours of work, and subject to federal and state wage and hour laws.
