Job Posting Description

Our mission is to identify the brain circuits responsible for symptoms common in autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions and translate these into possible targets for noninvasive treatment modalities, e.g., TMS and fMRI-based neurofeedback, using a big data computational approach to lesion tracing, functional connectivity, and behavioral phenotypic data.

We are seeking a motivated Computer Science or Data Science trained candidate to support clinical/translational computational research activities and assist with lab management. A successful candidate will provide entry-level computational support to scientists and clinicians by applying informatics tools, methods, and technologies; with close supervision and direction, completing assignments in the required timeframe while consistently adhering to standard operating procedures and best practices; adapting to a changing environment, resolving basic problems associated with assignments and seeking supervisor assistance when needed. Depending on prior research experience and initiative, successful applicants will work both collaboratively and independently on projects in the lab.

This Biomedical Informatics Research Data Scientist I will be responsible for:

  • Supports basic, translational, and clinical research by providing researchers with access to digital tools and technologies.
  • Updating and/or building new shell scripts and computational pipelines – typically Jupyter notebooks – to perform computational tasks in a HPC computing environment.
  • Downloading, transferring, and converting MRI data into research-ready formats and using existing or new scripts and notebooks to perform statistical analyses.
  • Assisting with code review or collaborative peer teaching of computer science/data science tools (e.g., git, datalad, json/yml files) for other projects as needed.
  • Regulatory tasks such as preparing and maintaining IRB protocols and correspondence.
  • Academic activities such as performing literature reviews and manuscript preparation.
  • Plan, design, and perform statistical analyses under the direction of the PI or senior lab members.
  • Coordinate with collaborators such as the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
In order to qualify, you must have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM with a focus in Data Science, Computer Science, Biomedical or Electrical Engineering or a related scientific discipline.
  • Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, and/or UNIX shell scripting.
  • Well-developed communication skills with experience teaching peers.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently and display initiative to introduce innovations to research study.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills and conceptual thinking.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines.
  • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for participant’s rights and individual needs.
  • (Preferred) At least one year of full-time research experience and practical knowledge of research principles through previous internship, work experience, or coursework.
  • (Preferred) Experience with import/export and formatting of datasets for statistical analysis.
  • (Preferred) Experience with statistical and/or neuroimaging analysis software.
  • (Preferred) Experience with database (mongoDB, SQL, etc…) or cloud-based platforms (AWS, Google Cloud).
  • (Preferred) two-year time commitment.
Boston Children’s Hospital offers competitive compensation and unmatched benefits including flexible schedules, affordable health, vision and dental insurance, child care and student loan subsidies, generous levels of time off, 403(b) Retirement Savings plan, Pension, Tuition and certain License and Certification Reimbursement, cell phone plan discounts and discounted rates on T-passes.
