Position Summary:

The Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research & Development (VMRD) Clinical Data Management System (CDMS) Engineer will be responsible for aiding in the implementation and maintenance of the VMRD clinical data management system. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the integrity, security, and accessibility of clinical data. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data management, system engineering, and a passion for improving healthcare through technology.

The role will be the Zoetis Tech & Digital (ZTD) engineering point of contact for CDMS and will assist in mentoring and leading other ZTD engineers supporting the CDMS platform. This position will work in partnership with the Automation & Data Sciences team to help drive the strategic engineering roadmap, scope, and maintenance strategy for the system.

This Engineer will also be responsible for maintenance on the application and coordination of maintenance activities with supporting groups such as infrastructure and networking. Maintenance tasks will also include application upgrades as appropriate to manage technical debt. The candidate will be a self-starter that is creative and fascinated with technology to design, implement, and maintain solutions in support of VMRD clinical study data. A strong academic background in technical discipline, a history of delivering solutions, and a demonstrated proficiency to identify and resolve complex technical issues.  The desire to continuously improve technical and business knowledge and the ability to work alongside both internal and external IT resources is required.

Responsibilities:

CDMS Engineering Strategy and Leadership

  • Help drive the initial implementation and evolution of the CDMS platform by providing advice and insight from an engineering perspective to the business.
  • Assign tasks and provide guidance to other ZTD engineers working on the CDMS platform.
  • Provide ownership of ZTD CDMS Engineering tasks and schedules.
  • Planning and assessment of engineering activities by providing timelines for engineering tasks, defining definition of done, and identification of roadblocks.

CDMS Software and System Engineering

  • In partnership with ADS, aid in the design, development, and maintenance of the clinical data management ecosystem.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to understand data requirements and workflows.
  • Implement data integration solutions to streamline data collection and reporting.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system issues to ensure continuous operation.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for system processes and procedures.
  • Define detailed documentation on Zoetis specific interfaces/processes tied to our CDMS implementation.
  • Execute or oversee installation and installation verification
  • Design, setup, and ensure execution of test automation

CDMS Technology Consultation

  • Translates business requirements into innovative solutions, system configurations, and coding tasks.
  • Participate in the definition of long-term systems strategies and roadmaps.
  • Provides technical effort estimates for proposed projects and solutions.  Assists project managers by identifying technical tasks and system dependencies, estimating resources and task duration, defining definition of done, and identification of roadblocks.
  • Provide financial evaluations of proposed solutions by providing technical effort estimates.

Software and Technology Support

  • Provide Level 3 and 4 support for the Clinical Data Management System.
  • Give assistance to level 1 and 2 support teams.

Continuous Learning and Technology Expertise

  • Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in clinical data management.
  • Provide application engineering subject matter expertise and guidance to other IT disciplines including Zoetis IT solution partners, application vendors and service providers.
  • Contribute to IT project delivery by providing technical and engineering expertise throughout all phases of the development life cycle with a focus on design & engineering activities.

Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience as an information technology professional or a closely related field and role.
  • Bachelor’s degree related to Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Rapid Application Developer, Engineer, or similar role within the Life Sciences industry.
  • Knowledge of rapid application development methodologies, such as Agile or Scrum.
  • Knowledge of software development best practices, including version control and continuous integration.
  • Experience developing solutions in CMC, including cell-line development, upstream, & downstream is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively in a fast-paced, innovative environment sometimes requiring frequent project transitions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas to audiences without a technical background.
  • Demonstrated ability for collaboration and conflict resolution with individuals representing a broad cross-section of the drug research and development function.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision or within a team and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with clinical data standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., CDISC, FDA).
  • Experience with implementations utilizing multiple vendors and/or departments.
  • Proven experience in data management and system engineering.
  • Experience with data management and/or information integration efforts in large scale programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships.
  • Ability to prioritize issues and drive progress in ambiguous situations.
  • Domain knowledge expertise in pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills as applied to system support.
  • Ability to analyze problems and derive a root cause.
  • Experience providing insight into improvement of processes and drive to focus on automation of software administration tasks.
  • Understanding of information delivery principles including the creation of abstraction layers, query optimization, and report level calculations.
  • Experience with emerging technologies related to data, visualization, and system infrastructure.
  • Experience with AGILE development methodologies.
  • Experience with software testing including unit, integration, and regression testing
  • Experience with technical writing for SDLC documentation

Technical Skills Requirements:

  • Fluent in leading platform configuration, deployment, and support of Database platforms (SQL Server, Oracle, Cloud)
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, Java)
  • Working knowledge of system design, application lifecycle, application frameworks (.NET, Python), cloud platforms (Azure, Amazon Web Services), database technologies (SQL Server, Oracle, Cloud), integrations (web service, MuleSoft), operating systems (Windows, Linux) and networks / firewalls
  • Proficiency in programming languages, such as Java, C#, or Python and using code sharing tools such as Git or GitHub
  • Familiarity with front-end languages, such as React, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Experience with database design and management, such as SQL, NoSQL, or Oracle
  • Familiarity with visualization tools, such as Tableau, Spotfire, or Power BI

Desired Competencies

  • Experience with electronic data capture (EDC) systems
  • Knowledge of cloud-based data management solutions
  • Certification in clinical data management or related fields
