General Summary:
General SummaryWe are seeking an experienced data scientist to join the Unum Marketing Analytics team. The ideal candidate is someone who is excited to transform data into actionable insights and impactful solutions which drive business results and improve the customer experience.
The role requires significant technical expertise in the fields of computer programming, applied statistics and data manipulation; and relies on increasing business knowledge. While some review by a manager is expected, this individual will take initiative in identifying and executing data science approaches to support business priorities.
Job Specifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s in a quantitative field required; Master’s preferred.
- Experience: 4+ years of relevant work experience preferred.
Core Skills & Expertise:
- Programming & Automation: Experience with file I/O, databases, APIs, DevOps, automation, and data mining.
- Data Visualization: Proficiency in at least one visualization tool, with knowledge of static and dynamic data visualizations.
- Statistics & Machine Learning: Expertise in statistical inference, regression, feature selection, and end-to-end machine learning workflows.
- Data Processing (ETL): Strong SQL skills, ability to join multiple datasets, explore databases, troubleshoot queries, and create logical data models.
Business & Leadership Capabilities:
- Communication & Industry Knowledge: Strong communication skills, financial services experience, and ability to engage senior leadership.
- Leadership & Change Management: Experience mentoring, promoting change initiatives, and leading proof-of-concept work.
- Preferred Traits: Entrepreneurial mindset, problem-solving ability, results-driven approach, and curiosity for continuous learning.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement analytical solutions using optimization, simulation, data mining, and statistical methods to drive business value.
- Integrate and process large data sets from various sources (DB2, SQL Server, Web API, Teradata) for analysis and modeling.
- Apply validation, aggregation, and reconciliation techniques to create high-quality data assets.
- Build and refine predictive models for forecasting, risk assessment, and trend analysis.
- Interpret and communicate findings to influence leadership decision-making.
- Automate processes to integrate solutions into business operations.
- Stay current with emerging statistical methods and tools.
- Provide training, mentorship, and support to junior Data Science team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$73,300.00-$150,500.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
