This position will support the university’s Department of Computer Science (UTCS), which boasts a top ten ranking from US News and more than 6,500 students across all programs. This places UT among the most significant intellectual hubs for computer science research and education anywhere in the world. UTCS has a close relationship with Austin’s thriving tech culture and works at the forefront of fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. UTCS is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications who can lead strategic efforts to amplify the department's national and global presence, build brand equity, attract top-tier students and faculty, and effectively communicate its leadership in cutting-edge research and education.

 

Purpose

The Director of Marketing and Communications will formulate and implement a comprehensive branding and marketing strategy to position the Department of Computer Science and affiliated initiatives (Machine Learning Laboratory, Texas AI, Texas Robotics, Computer & Data Science Online) as national leaders in technical education and research excellence. The Director will advance department priorities, including driving applications and yield of prospective students, recruiting world-class faculty, and establishing a strong national reputation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy for the Department of Computer Science. Establish the brand voice, ensuring consistent and memorable tone, style and branding across platforms. Develop a strategic marketing and communications plan. Serve as the department’s liaison with the College of Natural Sciences and UT Austin's central communications office and participate on committees as needed. Provide communications and marketing guidance for all strategic efforts of the department. Advise leadership on opportunities related to image, marketing and branding, and high-level communications issues. Advise on materials and communications associated with fundraising efforts and selected high-profile events. 

  • Collaborate closely with the Computer & Data Science online program office to develop and execute a comprehensive lead generation strategy aimed at increasing applications to the department's online master's programs in computer science, data science, and artificial intelligence. This includes identifying key target audiences, leveraging digital marketing channels, and utilizing data-driven insights to optimize outreach efforts. In addition, develop and implement a national earned media strategy to position the department as a recognized leader in the field of online education, highlighting the quality, accessibility, and impact of its online programs through press coverage and earned media.

  • Oversee efforts to coordinate a common campus narrative and web presence pertaining to artificial intelligence (Texas AI). Coordinate content development for a website hub inclusive of content from the Machine Learning Laboratory, Good Systems, Texas Robotics, and other key stakeholders.

  • Serve as creator, editor, and reviewer for websites, social media, advertising, e-mail, and publication content. Coordinate in-house team members and outside contractors to provide consistent content that features high impact, engaging text and visuals adapted to different audiences: students, alumni, donors, faculty, and the public. Be knowledgeable of and enforce best practices across team members. Determine, assign, and coordinate asset delivery from designers, illustrators, videographers, photographers, copywriters, podcasters, and marketing agencies to achieve brand building goals. 

  • Supervise two full-time marketing and communications staff members.

  • Develop and evaluate yearly marketing and communications plan based on ROI and allotted budget. Manage and maintain the budget including contracts, vendors, events, and publications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field

  • At least five years of experience in communications and marketing with increasing levels of responsibility

  • Ability to develop original messaging that advances Department of Computer Science vision and themes. 

  • Passion for the mission of the Department of Computer Science

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • More than the minimum education and experience

  • Degree specialization in an academic field relevant to computer science (computer science, computer engineering, data science, mathematics, machine learning, robotics)

  • Previous experience supervising staff and leading a team

Salary Range

$125,000+ depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.

  • Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines.

  • On site work is the general expectation for Department of Computer Science staff.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
